I Visited Riviera Maya’s Top Luxury Resorts: Here’s My Comparison

This is one of the most chic and elegant resorts I toured in Riviera Maya, offering a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere. The design feels effortlessly luxurious, with all decor being sourced directly from Mexico. Dining was a standout—every meal was exceptional, and the resort's unique pop-up dining experiences are not to be missed. I love that they only hire Mexican chefs. Etéreo is also known for its amazing on-property experiences, and I especially loved the cooking class and tequila tasting. The beach here was one of the best I saw all week, with expansive white sand, calm shallow water, stunning cabanas, hammocks set over the ocean, and plenty of space to relax. The beach here is best for babies and young toddlers, as it is very shallow. Service was consistently warm and attentive, and the resort's strong connection to local culture shines through experiences like the welcome copal ceremony and sunrise and sunset rituals. Spacious guest rooms, many featuring private plunge pools and large balconies, complete the experience.

Who is it for? Travelers seeking outstanding food, authentic cultural touches, beautiful surroundings, and a truly relaxing luxury escape. Perfect for couples, girlfriends' getaways, and families with young children.

I also took a quick peek over to the Edition and the St. Regis in the Kanai complex near Etereo. The Edition is great for couples, and the St. Regis is great for families or couples. Both are larger, much more contemporary resorts, with beautiful beaches, multiple restaurants, and a traditional resort experience. Safe and fun!

La Casa de la Playa

This was one of the most extraordinary and memorable luxury properties I have ever experienced, offering an adults-only escape that feels truly special from the moment you arrive. The service is absolutely impeccable, with seamless WhatsApp communication making every detail effortless and personalized throughout the stay. The suites are among the most stunning I have ever seen; picture spacious suites with private plunge pools, outdoor baths, and hammocks, all beautifully designed with local decor and filled with thoughtful touches like personalized robes. The resort features two serene infinity pools overlooking the water, creating a calming and deeply relaxing atmosphere that feels ideal for unwinding and disconnecting. Guests also enjoy all-inclusive access to 30+ dining options at the sister properties, as well as entry to the seven Xcaret eco parks and exclusive experiences such as the México Espectacular show, backstage tours, and even private cenote dinners. It comes at a high price tag but includes so much in your rate. One of my favorite touches was the 24/7 wine cellar, tequila bar, and chocolate room, where guests can enjoy unlimited curated offerings at any time of day or night.

Who is it for? Perfect for couples seeking a romantic getaway or a meaningful celebration like a birthday or anniversary.

I also visited Xcaret and Xcaret Arte (adults only). Both are massive properties, with over 1,800 rooms at Xcaret and 900 at Arte. They are for a very specific guest who wants a theme park atmosphere and large resorts with lots to see and explore! The design is very cool and a bit funky, and you also get access to all of the famous eco parks.

Conrad Tulum

This property has a sleek, contemporary beachfront vibe that feels both luxurious and relaxed, with very modern decor. The resort immediately impressed me with its stunning lobby, beautiful architecture, and incredible ocean views throughout the property. The rooms are spacious, stylish, and thoughtfully designed, each featuring a private balcony and plunge pool that creates a sense of privacy and relaxation. One of the resort's biggest strengths is its dining program, with 11 bars and restaurants offering plenty of variety and consistently excellent food. Despite its size, the layout is spread out beautifully, with five pools and expansive common areas that never felt crowded. Yet, the resort never feels overwhelming, and all areas are quick to access. The beachfront pools create a seamless connection to the ocean, while live music and DJs add a fun energy without overwhelming the resort's laid-back atmosphere. Service was warm and attentive throughout my stay, and I appreciated that the property still feels connected to its surroundings despite being part of a major luxury brand.

Who is it for? Works well for families with kids of all ages during the holiday season, and the rest of the year, it is equally appealing for couples and friend groups looking for a stylish beachfront escape close to Tulum's restaurants, nightlife, and excursions.

Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya

This is an elegant escape that works especially well for a quick 2–3-night getaway. One of its biggest advantages is its location—just about 15 minutes from the airport, making it incredibly convenient for a short stay. While the beach is not a highlight and the pools are limited to two smaller areas, the dining experience stands out with delicious food and a lively outdoor setting featuring fire pits and live music in the evenings. Overall, it's a sophisticated, compact property best suited for travelers looking for a short, high-end stay rather than a traditional beach-focused resort experience. I would not actively seek it out as the purpose of the trip, but rather, an easy getaway if you need to relax.

Who is it for? Works well for couples or friends looking for a quick and easy weekend getaway.

Sargassum in the Riviera Maya is highly unpredictable and can shift quickly, not only from season to season, but even day to day during your stay. Conditions can vary widely along the coastline, so it’s something to be aware of, even at the same resort within a short timeframe.
