Alaska by Sea: My Unforgettable Journey with Holland America
Curator’s statement

Alaska is one of the few places that truly takes your breath away. I knew it would be beautiful, but seeing it from the water—the glaciers, the wildlife, the scale of the landscape—was beyond anything I expected. It’s a destination that feels wild and untouched, and much of its beauty is only accessible by sea. From your private balcony or a quiet corner on deck, you can watch whales breach, glaciers calve, and eagles soar—all without ever packing a bag between stops. Cruising offers a seamless way to explore remote towns and pristine coastline, with immersive excursions that connect you to the culture, food, and adventure that make Alaska unforgettable. I plan Alaska cruises with care and intention, selecting cruise lines and itineraries that align with what makes this destination so special: its wild beauty, rich heritage, and once-in-a-lifetime moments. If Alaska is on your list, there’s no better way to see it than by sea.

Glacier Bay

I traveled to Alaska with a group in June, and I was genuinely blown away by how majestic and awe-inspiring it was. Towering glaciers, endless wilderness, breaching whales—it was beyond anything I imagined. If you’re considering a cruise to Alaska, I suggest sailing between May and September. Summer gives you the sweet spot of wildlife sightings, long daylight hours, and that perfect mix of adventure and comfort.

My verandah balcony view

We sailed on Holland America Line’s Koningsdam for our Alaska cruise. I wanted a ship that felt refined but not stuffy, with authentic Alaska programming, excellent food, and a comfortable atmosphere. Holland America has over 75 years of expertise in Alaska, and it shows—from their exclusive access to Glacier Bay National Park to the knowledgeable Park Ranger onboard. You can watch glaciers right from your balcony or reserve a private cabana, like my travel partners did, for top-deck viewing. It’s an unforgettable way to experience one of nature’s most incredible shows.

Salmon at Rudi's Sel De Mer

Dining was another highlight. One night, we had a fabulous dinner at Rudi’s Sel de Mer—beautiful seafood and French-inspired dishes in an elegant setting. Another evening, we enjoyed dinner at Tamarind, a dramatic venue at the top of the ship that features sweeping views and inspired Pan-Asian cuisine. You can also enjoy happy hour at the Tamarind Bar.

View from the Thermal Spa

Holland America brings Alaska to life with their “Alaska Up Close” programming, including local seafood tastings, native storytelling, and expert talks that added depth to the experience. You can also spend your days at sea in the Thermal Spa, soaking in the large hot tub with panoramic views.

Whale spotted in Juneau

The Uncharted Distillery Gin I infused

The shore excursions were just as memorable. In Juneau, we saw humpback whales and visited Mendenhall Glacier, which you can view with a short hike or take a helicopter tour for more epic views—and even walk on the glacier. We wrapped up that day with king crab legs at Tracy’s Crab Shack—casual, local, and delicious. In Skagway, you can ride the historic White Pass Railway or do what I did: rent a Jeep and drive the Klondike Highway into the Yukon. It’s scenic, flexible, and a bit adventurous. And in Ketchikan, we visited Uncharted Alaska Distillery, where you can infuse your own bottle of spirits to take home. It was hosted by one of the owners, who is deeply passionate about his craft and community. It felt personal and special—exactly the kind of off-the-beaten-path moment I look for when I travel.

Bear spotted on our drive from Skagway

Our Holland America cruise felt seamless, elevated, and full of character. For anyone wanting to experience Alaska—glaciers, wildlife, and local culture—with a touch of luxury and none of the overwhelm, this is the way to do it. I’d go back in a heartbeat. Tips for cruising Alaska

  • Book early for Glacier Bay access
Not all cruises go to Glacier Bay—permits are limited. Lines like Holland America and Princess have priority access, and these itineraries fill quickly.

  • Choose a balcony cabin
Watching glaciers calve or whales breach from your own balcony is a highlight of the trip. It’s worth the upgrade!

  • Pack for all four seasons
Alaska weather can be unpredictable. Bring layers, including a waterproof jacket, warm hat, gloves, and sturdy waterproof walking shoes.

  • Book popular excursions early
    Top excursions:
Juneau for Whale watching or visiting Mendenhall Glacier by helicopter
Skagway for White Pass Railway or Jeep rental

  • Take advantage of onboard programming
Naturalist lectures, cultural presentations, and National Park Service commentary in Glacier Bay help you understand the landscapes and wildlife around you.

  • Pick a mid-sized ship if you can
Ships with fewer passengers offer more personal space for viewing and less crowding during scenic cruising days.

  • Try the local food
Look for Alaska salmon, halibut, king crab, and local beers both onboard and at ports. Don’t miss Tracy’s Crab Shack in Juneau!

  • Bring binoculars and a good camera
Wildlife sightings—whales, eagles, bears, sea otters—can happen at any time. Binoculars and a zoom lens help you make the most of it.

  • Arrive in port early
Plan to fly in at least one day before your cruise and enjoy the city. We had a great time exploring Vancouver.
