Travel Guide to Colombia: Medellín, Cartagena, Baru Islands & Cannua

Medellín is a city of transformation and innovation, offering everything from stunning views in the mountains to a lively urban culture. My first stop was Cannua, a four-star eco-lodge in the Antioquian Mountains. Just an hour outside Medellín, Cannua offers an immersive nature experience, perfect for those looking to escape city life. My next stop was the Barú Peninsula. For those seeking a beachside escape, Barú Peninsula is a stunning destination. Whether you’re on a family vacation or a romantic getaway, Barú offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Pro tip: The drive to the Barú Peninsula can be harrowing, with dirt roads that are difficult to navigate especially after it rains. For a seamless transfer, I recommend taking a quick 30-minute boat ride from Cartagena.

After a relaxing beachside stay in Barú, my final stop was the vibrant city of Cartagena, known for its colorful colonial buildings, cobblestone streets and energetic nightlife. I checked into Casa San Agustin, a luxurious boutique hotel located in the heart of Cartagena’s historic center. Set within three beautifully restored 17th-century colonial buildings, the hotel has been re-imagined as an urban boutique retreat featuring exposed stone walls, antique furnishings and a serene courtyard with a pool. Known for its impeccable service and attention to detail, Casa San Agustin provides guests with a unique and intimate experience, just steps away from Cartagena's lively streets and rich history.

A perfect day in Cartagena begins with a traditional Colombian breakfast, and afterward, wandering the Walled City to take in the beauty of the historic architecture and colorful buildings.

Cevicheria is a must for a delicious seafood lunch, followed by a siesta or some pool time.

Don't miss Getsemaní, a neighborhood once considered a working-class district, now transformed into an artistic hub. It’s full of street murals, cool cafes and lively energy.

Catch the sunset along the old city walls, and then head to Alma for dinner.

Colombia is a diverse and captivating destination that offers something for everyone. Whether your are seeking adventure in the mountains, luxury by the beach or history and culture in the city, Colombia delivers it all. From the eco-luxury of Cannua to the colonial charm of Cartagena, this country is a must-visit.
