A Bahamas Getaway at The Royal at Atlantis
Curator’s statement

The Atlantis Paradise Island has always felt like one of those iconic resort experiences people remember long after the trip ends. Between the massive waterpark, marine habitats, beaches, restaurants, casino, and nonstop energy, there is truly something for almost every type of traveler. The Royal recently completed a major room renovation, giving the guestrooms and suites a much more modern, bright, beach-inspired feel while still keeping the classic Atlantis atmosphere people know and love. I especially think this resort works well for families, multigenerational trips, friend groups, and travelers wanting an active Bahamas getaway where there is always something happening.

Where to stay

There are some resorts you visit for a hotel room, and then there are places like Atlantis Paradise Island where the resort itself becomes the vacation. Atlantis has always been one of those iconic Bahamas destinations people remember long after they leave, and after recent room renovations and updates across the property, it feels fresher and more modern while still keeping the classic Atlantis energy everyone expects.

This is the type of place where you wake up thinking you’ll have a relaxing beach day and somehow end up snorkeling ruins, riding waterslides, watching sharks swim under you, eating seafood by the marina, and walking 20,000 steps without realizing it. It is big, very big, the kind of big where by day two you suddenly feel oddly proud you know how to get back to your room without checking the map.

Personally, what surprised me most was how much there truly is to do without ever leaving the property. Atlantis feels more like its own destination than simply a hotel. I think it works especially well for families, multigenerational trips, friend groups, couples who enjoy activity, and travelers who want nonstop entertainment without needing to overplan every second of their vacation. I would recommend staying at least four to five nights because there is honestly more to do than most people expect.

Staying at The Royal

We stayed at The Royal at Atlantis, which is ideal for travelers wanting to be right in the center of the action with easy access to Aquaventure, dining, casino, nightlife, and the main resort energy.

The Royal recently completed major room renovations, and the updated guestrooms feel brighter, more modern, and more beach inspired than older Atlantis rooms many people may remember. Think lighter colors, refreshed bathrooms, and a fresher overall feel while still keeping that signature Atlantis atmosphere.

One thing I appreciated is that even though Atlantis is energetic, your room can still feel like a break from the action, which becomes important after arguing with your children over who lost the room key for the third time.

For travelers wanting an elevated experience, The Royal also offers access to the Imperial Club, which includes upgraded amenities, concierge-style service, lounge access, and added perks that can make a longer stay feel even more comfortable.

Beaches, pools, and Aquaventure

The beach at Atlantis Paradise Island is exactly what people picture when dreaming about The Bahamas, soft white powder sand, clear turquoise water, and those bright blue colors that almost do not look real in photos. There were moments walking along the water where it honestly felt hard to believe this was an actual place and not a travel advertisement someone edited too heavily.

Atlantis has multiple pools throughout the property, ranging from lively family friendly areas to quieter spaces, plus private cabanas available to rent when you suddenly realize shade, snacks, and frozen drinks are worth every penny.

Families with younger children will especially love Poseidon’s Playzone, a fun water-play fort area with smaller slides and splash zones designed for kids. Nearby, the Poseidon family cabanas overlook the play area and Ripples pool, making them a great shaded home base for families spending the day there.

Aquaventure is honestly the heart of Atlantis. The 141-acre waterpark includes high-speed slides, rapids, lazy rivers, beaches, and pools spread throughout the resort.

The famous Leap of Faith sends riders almost vertically through a clear tunnel surrounded by sharks, which feels like either a terrible decision or a core memory, depending on your personality.

The Rapids River may have been one of my favorites because this is definitely not your typical lazy river. There are waves, drops, fast currents, and moments where your tube choices suddenly feel questionable.

Because Atlantis is such a popular destination, expect busier pool and waterpark areas during holidays and peak travel seasons.

Marine Life, Aquarium, and Dolphin Cay

One of the things Atlantis does so well is making marine life feel like part of the entire resort experience. Walking through the aquarium tunnels and marine habitats throughout the property almost feels like visiting an underwater world woven directly into the hotel itself.

One minute you are walking to dinner and suddenly find yourself stopping to watch sharks, stingrays, or colorful tropical fish swimming through massive lagoons. It becomes part of the atmosphere everywhere you go.

One of the most unique parts of Atlantis is Dolphin Cay, where guests can swim with dolphins, paddleboard, kayak, snorkel, interact with sea lions, and participate in marine conservation experiences.

If you decide to leave the property for a day, there are plenty of excursion options, including Pig Island tours, deep sea fishing charters, private yachts, snorkeling trips, swimming with turtles, and jet-skiing adventures.

One off property stop many tourists enjoy is the Nassau Straw Market near the cruise port area for local shopping and souvenirs. Prepare to negotiate and suddenly convince yourself you absolutely need something tropical for your house back home.

Dale Chihuly Glass and shopping

One thing I loved about Atlantis was how much art is woven into the resort itself, especially the stunning Dale Chihuly glass installations throughout the property. Some pieces feel elegant and ocean-inspired, while others almost look like underwater coral gardens exploding from the ceiling. I found myself constantly stopping to look up because every area seemed to have another incredible piece hidden somewhere.

There are also plenty of shops throughout Atlantis, ranging from luxury boutiques to beachwear, jewelry, and souvenir stores. Marina Village becomes especially lively at night with shopping, desserts, live music, and that fun vacation atmosphere Atlantis does so well.

Dining, nightlife, and entertainment

There are so many restaurants at Atlantis that you could honestly eat somewhere different every night and still not cover everything.

  • Café Martinique felt elegant and romantic with standout beetroot and goat cheese, French onion soup, and mahi mahi.

  • Fish by José Andrés was a great place to try local conch prepared several different ways while still highlighting Bahamian flavors.

  • Paranza by Michael White was perfect for pasta lovers, though the grilled swordfish ended up being one of my favorite meals of the trip.

  • Silan by Alon Shaya is another popular spot on property offering Mediterranean-inspired dishes in a beautiful setting.

  • KO SA-WAN offered great Southeast Asian-inspired dishes when we wanted something different.

  • Aura Nightclub keeps the nightlife going late into the evening for guests wanting music and energy after dinner.

Families and groups may also enjoy shows and entertainment at the Atlantis Theatre, adding even more activity to evenings on property.

If you leave the property, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Bahamas is nearby and fun for a more casual island atmosphere.

Spa, fitness, golf, and casino

The Mandara Spa & Fitness Center felt much larger and more luxurious than many resort spas. Between the plunge pools, steam rooms, saunas, oceanfront fitness offerings, and wellness areas, it would honestly be easy to spend half a day there.

Some standout treatments include:

  • Mandara Coffee & Coconut Milk Body Polish

  • Elemis Musclease Aroma Spa Ocean Wrap

There are also tennis courts by the water, pickleball, beach boot camps, and a large fitness center overlooking the ocean.

Golfers may want to visit Ocean Club Golf Course, while the Atlantis Casino remains one of the Caribbean’s largest casinos with slots, blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and enough flashing lights to convince you your next spin is definitely the lucky one.

Helpful tips before you go

Atlantis Paradise Island is about 30–40 minutes from Lynden Pindling International Airport depending on traffic, and taxis as well as private transfers are easy to arrange.

Winter and spring are especially popular thanks to warm temperatures and lower humidity.

Quick tips:

  • Comfortable shoes are a must because you will walk far more than expected

  • Restaurant reservations should absolutely be made ahead of time

  • Booking cabanas and marine experiences early is smart because they do sell out

  • Atlantis is best for active travelers, families, and travelers wanting nonstop entertainment

  • Travelers wanting a quiet boutique or adults-only atmosphere may prefer a smaller resort

Final thoughts

Atlantis is not the type of resort where you quietly sit by one pool all week doing nothing. This is a high-energy, activity-filled, memory-making destination where there is constantly something happening around you.

One minute you are watching marine life swim through lagoons, the next you are eating seafood by the marina, riding waterslides, listening to live music, or trying to figure out how your children still have energy after eight straight hours in the water.

There’s something about seeing that turquoise water in person for the first time that immediately makes you understand why people return to Atlantis year after year.

Atlantis is the kind of vacation where you return home slightly exhausted, slightly sunburned, already missing the turquoise water, and somehow talking about going back anyway.

Need to know

Do not forget sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and making dinner reservations ahead of time because between the Bahamian sun, all the walking around Atlantis, and popular restaurants filling quickly, you will thank yourself later.
