Property Spotlight: Safari Perfection at South Africa's Klaserie Drift
Curator’s statement

Finding the right safari lodge is critical to the experience, from logistics and amenities that add comfort and luxury to wilderness stays, to the quality of safari guides and the ethical stewardship and operations of the game reserve where they are located. South Africa’s Greater Kruger is one of the world’s premier safari destinations, and Klaserie Drift Misava Safari Camp in the Klaserie Private Reserve gets everything right, down to the last detail. Thoughtfully designed cottages, excellent food, a serene infinity pool, and exceptionally strong guiding are matched by warm, attentive hosting—the kind of combination that makes it hard not to start planning your return before you’ve even left.

There’s nothing quite like hearing the bush come alive at dawn, spotting a herd of elephants emerging from the treeline, or watching the sun rise over a golden savanna while hippos bellow in the distance. Every day brings its own surprises—the kind that remind us why we travel in the first place.

A juvenile lioness struts her stuff in the fading light of Klaserie private game reserve.

At South Africa’s Klaserie Drift Misava Safari Camp, days begin at 5:30 am with a perfectly prepared flat white or cappuccino in a travel mug as you hop into your open-sided safari vehicle and set out for the morning’s game drive. Easily reached via a short road transfer from Hoedspruit—with camp drivers meeting you at the airport and handling luggage for the 45-minute journey—the experience feels seamless from arrival. This kind of service sets the tone for the entire stay: from reception staff to bartenders to waiters, you’re made to feel warmly welcomed to a uniquely special place.

Klaserie's stringent conservation efforts have supported a preservation of its resident rhino population—opportunities to see them were a particular delight.

No role shapes the experience more than the safari guides. All are exceptional naturalists, and after four days of twice-daily dawn and dusk game drives, I was consistently impressed by the depth of knowledge, tracking ability, and judgment on display. Wildlife encounters were unhurried and respectful, often spent quietly observing leopards, lions, elephants, and giraffes without other vehicles nearby—a reflection of both strong guiding and the Klaserie Private Reserve’s stringent regulations around human-animal interaction. The result is a safari experience that feels intimate and deeply mindful, rather than competitive or crowded.

Our safari guide, Matt, excelled in all aspects of our twice-daily game drives.

While the animals take center stage, Misava Camp ensures the rest of the experience is equally considered. The design is elevated and elegant, yet intentionally understated, with open, airy spaces that feel in harmony with the surrounding landscape rather than staged against it. After a post-drive breakfast, midday hours unfold easily by the camp’s infinity pool overlooking the Klaserie River, where giraffes regularly traverse the hillside beyond and animals visit the watering hole below. In-room massages, yoga, books, and board games create genuine opportunities to rest and reset between game drives.

Even dedicated food lovers will be pleased by the quality of the full-board dining: hearty breakfasts, fresh lunches of salads and grilled meats, and multi-course dinners featuring local specialties like kudu tenderloin in red wine reduction or rosemary-scented lamb chops with quinoa and baby vegetables. Evening drives are punctuated by sundowners in the bush—a gin and tonic, or a glass of South African wine enjoyed as zebra and impala graze nearby.

Sundowners in the bush punctuate evening game drives beautifully.

Misava has just nine guest accommodations, including three River View Villas with plunge pools and rooftop starbeds, two River Suites ideal for couples, and four rondavel-style Garden Suites, some interleading for families. With a maximum of 12–16 guests, the camp feels quiet and personal, making it well suited to couples, photographers, and families with older children, as well as small groups interested in a full camp buyout. It’s an ideal choice for travelers seeking a more immersive, stylish safari experience without formality or excess—and not a party lodge, with evenings around a communal fire pit tending toward relaxed and early.

The River Suites at Misava Camp offer all the creature comforts: luxe linens, two-story thatched roofs, soaking tubs, indoor and outdoor showers, and river views from private balconies.

Need to know

While many safari travelers prioritize high-season stays for maximum wildlife viewing, visits during shoulder or off-season periods offer deep discounts, smaller crowds, and lush landscapes. During a March stay, my husband and I had the property to ourselves for several nights, meaning private game drives with a guide all to ourselves and candlelit dinners served anywhere on the property we wished. Daytime temperatures were comfortable, and our ability to see all the animals on offer was hardly diminished by the verdant seasonal environment.

For travelers combining safari with Cape Town and the Winelands, Misava pairs especially well as part of a broader South Africa itinerary, with multiple daily flights into Hoedspruit from both Johannesburg and Cape Town. A four-night stay allows time to settle into the rhythm of camp life and maximize wildlife viewing, while the fully fenced grounds and solidly built villas provide an added sense of comfort and security throughout the stay.
