A Family Cruise in Greece and Turkey With Teens
Curator’s statement

I absolutely love cruising with Royal Caribbean in Europe, and believe it is the best way to see multiple destinations in a limited amount of time with a family. One of our favorite perks of cruising in Europe is not having to unpack our bags at each location. Royal Caribbean provides a consistent experience over and over again. The atmosphere is fun and there are plenty of options to keep a family busy, even with older teenagers. We sailed on Brilliance of the Seas. It is a great value—it has limited onboard experiences compared to some of the larger ships, so expectations have to shift a bit, but it comes at a great price point. It includes a pickleball court and putt-putt course. We like the value of this type of cruise because we intend to spend most our time in port.

Our trip started with a full day in Athens—we wandered around, walked to the Temple of Zeus and Syntagma Square, and roamed the delightful streets of Plaka. We also enjoyed fantastic, authentic Mediterranean cuisine at Erato, a great place to get a few platters to share so you can try multiple foods!

Our first cruise stop was Rhodes, a fantastic setting for parasailing and strolling the medieval city inside the walls. There are also several fun rental car options right outside the cruise port. We drove up the coast in an antique car with a few extra hours on our hands.

Kusadasi, Turkey

Bodrum bazaar

We also visited Cyprus and then Turkey, which we loved! Bodrum was a true highlight and a fantastic place to take a foodie tour. We wandered the bazaars while eating baklava and enjoying their own special shawarma, which includes vegetables that are mixed into the meat while roasting and is phenomenal! Kusadasi is the port city for Ephesus. I highly recommend the serene House of Mary experience while in port.

We also sailed to Santorini for a private tour—the only way to truly experience the entire island while on a limited schedule. The last stop was a scenic e-bike tour of Athens. What an incredible way to wrap up a family trip and see the city with a local, which is always the way to go!

Athens changing of the guards

Forty-One Beach Club Santorini

I highly recommend InnAthens Hotel. It is a short walk from Syntagma Square, Ermou Street shopping, and Plaka. The breakfast is fantastic and it's a beautiful property. The staff were very accommodating for our crazy early airport departure, and it is also a great value.

Need to know

There are so many amazing places to eat in Athens. However, if you want the best deal and the best flavor, go to Mikpo Politiko, right by the Acropolis. It's the best street food. Just stand right there on the street, taking in all the sights, while your mouth delights in their gyros.
