Curator’s statement
Victoria Falls is known for its breathtaking beauty, but for those with mobility challenges or hearing loss, navigating this iconic site can be daunting. However, I found that, by accessibility being thoughtfully incorporated into the experience, it is possible for everyone to appreciate the grandeur of the falls.

Wheelchair-accessible paths
Victoria Falls offers an impressively inclusive experience for visitors of all abilities. The main entrance on the Zimbabwean side leads to a network of well-maintained, paved paths that are fully wheelchair-accessible. These paths meander through the lush rainforest and connect to several key viewpoints, such as Livingstone Point, Devil’s Cataract Viewpoint and Main Falls Viewpoint. Each of these spots provides breathtaking, panoramic views of the cascading water, the deep Batoka Gorge and the ever-present mist that rises dramatically into the air. The viewpoints are close to one another and do not require strenuous walking or hiking, making it easy for those with mobility issues to enjoy the falls without stress. Benches and shaded rest stops are thoughtfully placed along the route, perfect for taking a break and enjoying the scenery in comfort.

Assistance & accessibility services
The staff at Victoria Falls are known for their hospitality and attentiveness. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and immediately offered assistance for our senior family member and young child. Wheelchairs are available for rent at the main gate for a nominal fee, and staff are ready to help navigate through the park’s paths if needed. Their proactive support made the entire experience smooth and enjoyable, allowing everyone in our group to take in the majesty of the falls together. Whether helping with a wheelchair ramp or providing helpful tips about the best viewing angles, the staff ensured accessibility was never a barrier to enjoyment.
Visual & sensory engagement
Even for visitors with hearing loss, the experience of Victoria Falls is rich with sensory delights. The dramatic spray of the falls creates an almost otherworldly mist that dances in the sunlight, often giving rise to stunning double rainbows — a natural phenomenon best viewed near Rainbow Falls Viewpoint, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. The dense, emerald-green rainforest, sustained by the constant moisture, is teeming with life, including colorful birds like the Livingstone’s turaco and sunbirds, as well as curious vervet monkeys. For those who cannot hear the thunderous roar of the water, the visual spectacle of the 100-meter drop and the swirling clouds of mist offer a deeply moving connection to nature’s power. Guides are well-trained to communicate clearly through gestures and visual aids, enriching the visit with fascinating facts about the geology, indigenous culture and wildlife surrounding the falls.
Need to know
Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes — some areas can be damp and slightly muddy from the mist. During the rainy season (February to May), the falls are at their most powerful, but the mist can be overwhelming. Dry season (August to December) offers clearer views and less spray, making it easier for photography and mobility. If planning to view the falls from both Zimbabwe and Zambia, check in advance about visa requirements and ensure any mobility equipment is easy to transport.
