Hawaiʻi Luxury Travel Guide: Which Island Is Best & Where to Stay

Oʻahu

Oʻahu is the most populous Hawaiian island and home to Honolulu, Waikīkī Beach, and Pearl Harbor, making it the cultural and commercial center of the state. It is best suited for travelers who want a dynamic mix of luxury shopping, dining, beaches, and activities all in one place. Beyond Waikīkī, the island also offers experiences such as the Dole Plantation, botanical gardens, and Kualoa Ranch, famous for its Jurassic Park filming locations. This is the most touristy island and also the most family-oriented, with a lively atmosphere that can feel quite busy during peak seasons. While it is convenient and activity-filled. For accommodations, I prefer the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina, which feels removed from the crowds of Waikīkī and offers a true luxury resort experience with multiple pools, excellent dining, and a beautiful beachfront setting. My second choice would be The Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikiki Beach, which offers spacious residential-style accommodations and a slightly lower price point while still providing a luxury experience in a more secluded location.

Oʻahu

The Big Island

The Big Island (Hawaiʻi) offers a completely different experience, often confused with Oʻahu but far more raw and expansive in landscape. Instead, it is defined by dramatic volcanic terrain, black lava fields, and expansive coastlines. Kona serves as the island’s metropolitan hub and is ideal for travelers seeking adventure, stargazing, snorkeling, and a deeper connection to Hawai’i’s natural landscapes. My top hotel recommendation is Rosewood Kona Village. Following an extensive redevelopment, it has quickly become one of Hawai'i’s most exciting luxury resorts. The dining is exceptional, and every accommodation is a standalone bungalow with indoor-outdoor living spaces that feel incredibly private and connected to nature. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai remains a classic favorite, and delivers the impeccable service the brand is known for, but it feels more traditional in design compared to the newer Rosewood. Personally, while I appreciate the uniqueness of the Big Island, the volcanic landscape feels less lush and tropical than the other islands, making it slightly lower on my personal list.

Maui

Maui is often considered the most well-rounded Hawaiian island and is a popular destination for first-time visitors. It offers a beautiful balance of luxury resorts, excellent beaches, outdoor activities, and iconic sightseeing such as the Road to Hāna and Haleakalā National Park. The luxury resort area of Wailea is particularly appealing because everything feels polished, walkable, and centered around beautiful beaches. Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is my top recommendation and one of my favorite resorts in Hawaiʻi overall. The service is exceptional; the adults-only pool is a major highlight, and the property consistently delivers a refined luxury experience while still being family-friendly. The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua offers a more secluded setting surrounded by nature and golf courses, making it a good option for travelers who prefer a quieter atmosphere. Maui does become extremely popular during holiday periods, especially with families, so advance planning is important.

Kauaʻi

Kauaʻi, known as the Garden Isle, is the most naturally lush and undeveloped of the major Hawaiian islands. It is defined by emerald mountains, waterfalls, dramatic coastlines, and a slower pace of life. This is the island I often recommend to honeymooners and couples looking for a more romantic, nature-focused experience. There are fewer luxury hotels here, which helps preserve the island’s intimate feel. My clear favorite is 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, which I consider one of the most beautiful resorts in Hawaiʻi. The setting overlooking Hanalei Bay is spectacular, and the property does an excellent job blending luxury, wellness, and sustainability. The resort feels peaceful and restorative rather than flashy, making it perfect for honeymoons, babymoons, and travelers who want to disconnect and enjoy Hawai’i’s natural beauty.

Kauaʻi

Lānaʻi

Lānaʻi is the smallest inhabited Hawaiian island and offers one of the most exclusive luxury experiences in Hawaiʻi. Getting here requires a short flight or ferry, and once you arrive, the island feels worlds away from the more visited Hawaiian destinations. Four Seasons Resort Lanai is the centerpiece of the island and delivers a true ultra-luxury resort experience with beautiful rooms, excellent dining, and a level of privacy that is difficult to find elsewhere in Hawaiʻi. For travelers focused on wellness, Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort, is entirely different and centered around health, longevity, fitness, and personalized wellness programming. Lānaʻi is best for travelers who prioritize seclusion, service, and relaxation over sightseeing and activities, and it offers one of the most unique luxury resort experiences in the Hawaiian Islands.
