Tucked away on the serene Roosevelt Island is the Graduate by Hilton New York. Located on the East River between Manhattan and Queens, the Graduate feels as if it’s a world away…but oh-so-close. It’s the first and only hotel on the island and is a unique destination that blends modern design, cultural storytelling, and green surroundings. Located right next to the Cornell Tech campus, and keeping with the trend of all Graduate hotels, the theme is dedicated to the campus it serves. With easy access by subway, car, or the iconic Roosevelt Island Tramway (good times—it’s an aerial tram), getting there is both simple and fun. The Graduate’s peaceful location, minimal traffic, and stunning skyline views make it a top choice for visitors looking to escape the city’s hustle without sacrificing proximity. Both the tram and subway stop are a five- to seven-minute walk to the hotel.

Inside, the lobby is anchored by a “you can’t miss it” Flyboy sculpture by Hebru Brantley, which celebrates the heroism of the Tuskegee Airmen. This bold artwork flanks the check-in desk and sets the tone for the hotel’s celebration of culture and creativity. The rest of the lobby feels like a chic, oversized private library, with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves modeled after Karl Lagerfeld’s personal collection, giving the space a cozy yet elevated feel. As you walk through the rest of the lobby, down the hallway, and to the elevator, you will be greeted by dozens of Roosevelts—unfortunately, not the currency, but photos of both Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) and Eleanor adorning the walls from floor to ceiling.

Rooms are modern, clean, and spacious, with plush pillows, crisp linens, and playful design details. The bathroom stands out with tiled showers and Flyboy-themed wallpaper, a stylish nod to the hotel’s signature art. A framed portrait of FDR above the bed offers a subtle tribute to the island’s namesake. One of the most playful and unique features of the room selections is the "BIG" Suite, inspired by the Tom Hanks classic. True to the film, the suite includes whimsical touches and nostalgic decor (including bunk beds) that transport you right back to that iconic FAO Schwarz piano scene.

The on-site restaurant, Anything at All, located just off the lobby, is another highlight. The menu offerings are absolutely delicious for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I had the opportunity to dine in for dinner and had the Caesar salad with chicken—it was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly portioned! For dessert, the donuts and the cookie with ice cream were standouts—indulgent and beautifully plated. Even more impressive was the staff, who were warm, attentive, and truly elevated the dining experience.

The Graduate New York is an affordable gem. With its convenient location, fun design, exceptional service, and unique touches, it’s the perfect location for anyone looking to be close to the action, but far away from it at the same time!
