A Stay That Stays With You: Textures, Taste and Tranquility
Curator’s statement

Perched high in Portugal’s Serra da Estrela and roughly between Lisbon and Porto, Casa de São Lourenço isn’t just a five-star hotel—it’s a five-sense experience. This property quietly redefines what luxury can feel like, with every room, bite, and view thoughtfully curated to reflect the soul of the surrounding region. It was one of the most sensory experiences I’ve had in recent years—and one that invites guests to connect deeply with texture, taste, and tranquility.

Portugal has no shortage of soulful stays, but Casa de São Lourenço offers something truly rare: a luxury retreat rooted in place, texture, and story. Once a traditional Pousada, this unique five-star property has been beautifully reimagined into a high-design haven that celebrates Portuguese craft, cuisine, and culture.

Expansive views from private terraces

When we visited in June 2025, the property was reached via one of two winding mountain roads. (Note that in winter, only one remains open due to snow.) The drive itself feels like a shift in mindset. You leave the noise behind and ascend into serenity.

Panoramic views from most accommodations

Each accommodation tells its own story. The Comfort Garden Room felt intentional and warm, while the Premium Panorama Plus suite offered expansive views over the Serra da Estrela, a small private terrace and minimalist elegance. Some accommodations include fireplaces or panoramic windows, but all invite a kind of quiet luxury that never tries too hard.

At Restaurant São Lourenço, the menu changes with the seasons, but one thing remains constant: everything is sourced nearby. I loved the local cucumber soup paired with a crisp Portuguese white—light and deeply flavorful. The menu of the day is the best way to explore the chef’s vision. And the space itself? An artwork in its own right, with floating golden Burel wool stars above and dramatic views through wide glass walls.

Wellness here is not a side note—rather, it’s central to the experience. The Burel Spa offers indoor and outdoor (albeit small) pools, custom massages, and holistic rituals that incorporate locally inspired treatments. I recommend the full-day of Purifying Wellness, the OFURÔ Nordic Bath, sauna, and Turkish Bath. The fitness center overlooks the mountains, offering another reason to move slowly and mindfully.

And then there’s the texture—in every sense. The family behind the hotel also owns the nearby Burel wool factory, which supplies the property’s curtains, rugs, artwork, and even the guests’ slippers! Book a private tour of the factory (your Fora advisor can arrange this), and you’ll come home with a new appreciation for the sustainable luxury this property represents.

Local vegetables served over potato puree

This is a destination for clients who value design, stillness, nature, and meaningful luxury. Whether for a winter ski retreat or a summer reset, Casa de São Lourenço is a place you’ll want to return to—even before you leave.

Need to know

  • Best for: Couples, wellness travelers, design enthusiasts, and slow travel seekers.

  • Travel season tips: Winter is surprisingly the high season due to skiing in the Serra da Estrela. Note that only one road is open in the snowy months.

  • Dining: Choose the chef’s menu of the day and trust the local wine pairings.

  • Burel wool: Don’t miss the chance to tour the factory—and shop for authentic wool blankets or accessories.

  • Daily guided hikes: These are included in your stay and offer a wonderful way to explore the surrounding landscape.

  • Book with your Fora Advisor: To ensure the best room view, season, and exclusive perks (especially early during high season which, at this property, is winter).
