Curator’s statement
Sailing through Alaska aboard the Holland America Koningsdam was both inspiring and memorable. I’d always dreamed of visiting Alaska, but as someone who was hesitant about cruising, I saw this as the perfect chance to experience it firsthand—and to bring my cruise-cautious clients along for the journey. What unfolded was a trip filled with awe: glaciers, wildlife, quiet moments at sea, and the ease of waking up in a new, breathtaking port each day. It completely shifted my perspective—and if you have reservations about cruising, I hope it will do the same for you.

Holland America truly offered something for everyone onboard. Families could relax in simple, welcoming places, while others—including me—found quiet beauty from my balcony and simple luxury around every corner. One of my favorite discoveries—besides the Amsterdam Bar with lattes on-demand—was the ship’s library. It was beautifully curated with multiple copies of bestsellers and novels you’ve been meaning to read. It became a peaceful retreat for many on sea days. Just beyond, in the Crow’s Nest, the game room added an unexpected delight—offering panoramic sea views as guests gathered around for puzzles, mahjong, and dominoes. These cozy, communal spaces made the ship feel warm and connected.

Glacier Bay was one of the absolute highlights, and Holland America does it right. As we sailed in, the onboard naturalist narrated the journey, pointing out wildlife in real time and explaining the geological history of the glaciers. It brought the entire experience to life and made the scenery even more meaningful. The crew, too, were standouts. My room steward greeted me by name the moment I arrived and cared for me throughout the voyage with kindness and attention. Every interaction onboard felt personal, genuine, and gracious. Our server at the Tamarind bar, where the group met nightly for happy hour, knew names and drink orders first night by the second round.

I also made good use of the ship’s thermal suite, an upgraded option which provided a quiet, panoramic sanctuary with a large hydrotherapy tub, heated loungers, and a sauna—all with views of the passing sea. For those looking to level up the onboard experience, private cabanas were absolutely the way to go. A few in our group rented one and enjoyed private service and a sheltered space—whether cozy during chilly weather or open to the sun to take in the incredible coastal scenery.
Dining was another standout. Our dinner at Rudy’s Sel de Mer was a highlight: French-Mediterranean cuisine featuring escargot, warm focaccia with olive oil–infused dipping sauces, and the freshest halibut of the trip. We also had a fantastic experience at the Morimoto pop-up sushi night, a surprising and elevated culinary moment at sea.

Hike in Ketchikan
This cruise changed my mind about cruising and left me deeply inspired to share the experience with clients who might also be unsure. Between the scenery, the warmth of the crew, and the comfort of the ship itself, Holland America’s Alaska itinerary is a perfect blend of ease and elegance, and no-brainer way to experience Alaska’s wild, unforgettable beauty.

Need to know
Travelers should know that Alaska rewards those who go beyond the surface—and small-group or independently booked excursions can offer a more personal, immersive experience. In several ports, I recommend exploring third-party operators for activities like sea kayaking in the Inside Passage, where smaller groups and experienced local guides create more meaningful, low-impact adventures. In Ketchikan, don’t miss the Uncharted Alaska Distillery experience—a lesser-known but memorable stop that combines Alaskan spirit-making with storytelling and regional flavor. Summertime Alaska cruises can be unexpectedly crowded. Planning ahead for specialty dining, spa access, or even renting a private cabana onboard can elevate the cruise experience and ensure quiet, personalized moments between adventures.
