Romantic Getaway in the Floating City
Curator’s statement

Venice is such a charming and unique city. Something about walking through the canals and dinner on the water with fantastic Italian wine makes it the perfect place for a romantic getaway.

After spending time in Rome, we wanted to getaway to the Floating City. After taking the train directly in, we took a water taxi to our hotel, the Splendid Venice. The first day, we explored and went on a walking food tour for a progressive dinner through the streets of Venice. Our tour guide, a born and raised Venetian, took us to her favorite neighborhood spots for five different courses. The food tour was an awesome way to see places that were off the beaten path, have incredible food and wine, and learn about Venice all at the same time!

My personal favorite stop on the food tour

Saint Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace

Our second day started at Caffè Florian in St. Mark’s Square. This is more of a touristy spot to go to, but for good reason. Caffè Florian is known for being one of the oldest cafes (opened in 1720!) and has survived major floods and even World War II, without ever losing its beauty. Afterwards, we walked around the square, saw Doge’s Palace, then made our way to Harry’s Bar for the signature Peach Bellini. We ended the day with dinner at Ristorante Riviera, where the views and food were 10/10.

Caffè Florian

On our last day, we used the water taxi to explore Murano and Burano islands known for handblown glass and handmade lace, respectively. These are beautiful islands that are fun to explore leisurely, or you could always go to a glass blowing class on Murano for a more involved experience. We ate lunch at AI Banky for lunch in Burano based on a local’s recommendation, and it did not disappoint! Once making it back to Venice, we went on a classic gondola ride (because you can’t go to Venice without doing it). Then, we ended with dinner at Cantina Do Spade which was recommended by our food tour guide and had delicious Venetian food.

Rooftop views from Splendid

To end the trip, we had a (very) early water taxi ride to the airport. The sunrise views on this taxi ride were the perfect way to end the best trip.

Bridge of Sighs

Need to know

Venetians treat their sidewalks as if they are roads (because that is what they are to them). Be mindful of this and walk in a straight line (on the righthand side) when walking in a narrow space. The locals really appreciate this gesture!
