Where great Uruguayan wine begins.

For as long as I can remember, how I live my birthday sets the tone for my entire year, so I usually try to align it with a trip—or plan a getaway.

This year, a getaway it was.

Immersed in vineyards, Finca del Sacramento is a boutique hotel made up of cabin-style rooms, thoughtfully spaced to ensure privacy and quiet. From the very beginning, it felt like the kind of place where time slows down.

A place to sit, breathe, and stay a little longer

Accommodation & atmosphere

We arrived early and our room wasn’t ready yet, but that hardly mattered. There’s a common area with sofas, a TV, and comfortable spaces to sit, read, or write. Wi-Fi works perfectly if you need it, but we chose to disconnect and head straight outside, walking through the vineyards.

Thoughtfully spaced cabins, designed for privacy and quiet

The grapes grown here are taken to Bodega Los Cerros de San Juan, the oldest winery in Uruguay, where the wines are produced. There’s a day tour you can book directly at the finca: a wine tasting among the vineyards followed by a visit to the nearby bodega to see the winemaking process. Wines can also be purchased on-site, often with very good discounts.

My personal favorites: Riesling and Albariño.

We chose to take the complimentary bicycles and ride around the finca and its surroundings. There’s a quiet river beach nearby, where you can enjoy the peace of the Río Uruguay without crowds. For swimming, though, I preferred to settle by the pool, surrounded by greenery, lemon trees, and flowers. Sunbathing, answering birthday messages full of love, and doing absolutely nothing felt like the perfect plan.

Dining

And then there’s the food. The restaurant menu is small but carefully curated, with dishes made using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Everything feels homemade, from the bread to the olive oil—also produced at Los Cerros de San Juan.

Homemade bread, wine glasses, and vineyard views

One dessert deserves a special mention: dulce de leche cremoso with meringue and almond praline. That was my birthday “cake,” and it was unforgettable.

The restaurant has open views over the vineyards, sheep fields, and nearby plantations. What truly made the difference, though, was the warmth of the staff. They were attentive, kind, and present, taking care of every detail and making my birthday feel genuinely memorable.

Exquisite, seasonal cooking

In sum

Whether it’s for a birthday, anniversary, honeymoon, a friends’ reunion, or simply taking a break from routine, this is a place made for celebrating life. Because beyond birthdays, every day—every moment—is special. And gifting yourself experiences like this, why not?

Quiet corners and blooming flowers

Simple decor with thoughtful details

Need to know

  • The finca is 15 minutes by taxi from Colonia.

  • It’s about 3 hours from Montevideo.

  • From Buenos Aires, the ferry crossing takes around 2 hours.

  • You don’t need a car if the idea is to enjoy the finca. Taxis to town are easy, and if you plan to enjoy the wine, driving isn’t a good idea.

  • Late check-out is highly recommended—every extra minute there is worth it.
