Antigua: Where historic architecture meets modern charm

Antigua, Guatemala, captivates from the moment you arrive. This UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves one of the finest examples of Spanish colonial architecture in the Americas, with meticulously maintained baroque structures dating back to the 16th century. Walking the iconic cobblestone streets feels like stepping back in time, yet the city pulses with vibrant contemporary energy.

What makes Antigua truly special is how seamlessly past and present coexist. Preserved ruins have been thoughtfully transformed into some of the city's most sought-after destinations—chic restaurants serve gourmet cuisine within ancient stone walls, boutique shops occupy former colonial buildings, and couples exchange vows in stunning venues framed by centuries-old arches. The juxtaposition creates an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.

Lake Atitlán: Villages, culture & stunning natural beauty

Lake Atitlán ranks among the world's most breathtaking lakes, ringed by dramatic volcanoes and dotted with traditional Mayan villages, each offering its own distinct character. Some towns buzz with artistic energy while others maintain quieter, more traditional atmospheres. Sailing across the lake's crystalline waters, with volcanoes rising majestically around us and traditional villages visible along the shoreline, was an absolute trip highlight. Another unforgettable experience was hiking between Santa Cruz and Tzununa along a cliffside path overlooking the lake. The stunning vistas were so reminiscent of Italy's Amalfi Coast that we had to remind ourselves we were in Guatemala.

In San Juan La Laguna, an intimate cooking class with a Mayan Tz'utujil chef became one of our most meaningful experiences. She welcomed us into her culture, teaching our children to make authentic tortillas and tamales from scratch, cooking with all local fresh produce and ingredients.

San Juan also introduced us to a women's cooperative showcasing extraordinary craftsmanship. These artisans process their own cotton, extract dyes from natural plants and fruits, and hand-weave every piece— clothing, scarves, bags, and textiles—using techniques passed down through generations.

Guatemalans share a love affair with fireworks that surprises many first-time visitors. Children learn to handle them from a remarkably young age, making pyrotechnics an integral part of the culture. If you're visiting during festive seasons or New Year's, expect spectacular displays launching from multiple locations throughout towns and cities. It's a joyful tradition that adds unexpected excitement to any Guatemalan adventure.
