Curator’s statement
Kumarakom Lake Resort feels like a true escape; it is serene, soulful, and effortlessly beautiful. Set along the backwaters of Kerala, it’s a place where time slows, whether you’re drifting through palm-lined canals on their gorgeous houseboat or unwinding amid lush, tranquil surroundings. The setting is incredibly peaceful, and the service is warm, attentive, and intuitive without ever feeling intrusive. It’s the kind of destination that stays with you long after you leave.

Kumarakom Lake Resort offers one of the most serene and immersive backwater experiences in Kerala, and the houseboat is truly the star. Their two-bedroom houseboat, complete with a private chef, feels both intimate and indulgent—perfect for couples, families, or small groups looking to slow down and disconnect. They also offer a five-bedroom houseboat for larger parties or celebrations. The sunsets from the deck are unbelievable, and the stillness of the water creates an incredibly peaceful atmosphere. I recommend staying on the houseboat for at least two nights, especially to take advantage of their day excursion, which glides through the backwaters and stops at beautiful historic and cultural sites along the way.
The resort itself feels like a lush nature sanctuary, blending traditional architecture with modern luxury. Guest rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, featuring private plunge pools and stunning outdoor bathrooms that elevate the sense of privacy and relaxation. The dining is exceptional—fresh, flavorful, and deeply rooted in local ingredients, making every meal feel intentional and memorable. For travelers who value wellness, the spa is a true highlight, offering some of the best Ayurvedic treatments in the region.
I highly recommend booking one of their spa packages, which provide excellent value and allow guests to fully experience the resort’s wellness offerings. Options include all-inclusive dining packages as well as food-and-spa combinations that are ideal for longer stays. Kumarakom Lake Resort is perfect for couples, honeymooners, wellness-focused travelers, and anyone seeking a peaceful, soul-restoring escape. For a well-rounded Kerala experience, I also suggest pairing this stay with their sister property in Fort Kochi, as I did—it adds a vibrant, cultural contrast and allows you to experience the charm of a smaller historic city alongside the tranquility of the backwaters.

Need to know
Plan to slow down here as this is not a destination meant to be rushed. I recommend building in downtime, especially on the houseboat, where mornings and sunsets are the real highlights. Pack light, breathable clothing and comfortable sandals, and don’t forget swimwear for the private pools and spa facilities.
For the best experience, book spa treatments and houseboat stays in advance, especially during peak season, as availability can be limited. Two nights on the houseboat is ideal, but even longer stays are rewarding if you want a deeper sense of calm. This destination is best suited for couples, honeymooners, wellness-focused travelers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape rather than nightlife or fast-paced sightseeing.
