It's About the Journey, Not the Destination: Sailing out of NY on Odyssey of the Sea
Curator’s statement

If you're dreaming of a cruise that combines high-tech thrills (iFly, Two70), relaxing spaces and sunny Caribbean vibes — all without flying to Florida — let me introduce you to Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas. We sailed round-trip from Bayonne, NJ (Cape Liberty) to the Bahamas, and this ship absolutely delivered. Don’t let cooler weather deter you — whether rain or shine, there was no shortage of activities to enjoy on this ship!

Packing tips: What you really need for this cruise

When cruising from Bayonne, New Jersey aboard Odyssey of the Seas to the sunny Bahamas, it’s important to pack for a wide range of weather conditions. The first and last sea days can be unexpectedly chilly, especially while sailing through the Northeast Atlantic. Even in spring or early summer, wind on deck can make it feel colder than you’d expect — so bring a lightweight jacket, a hoodie and a few layers for comfort. Once you head south, temperatures warm up significantly, and you'll be glad you packed your swimwear, flip-flops and tropical-ready attire.

Also, keep in mind that the Atlantic waters near the Northeast coast are often rougher than those closer to the Caribbean. Motion sickness is more common during these stretches, so it’s wise to bring along motion sickness remedies — whether it’s Dramamine, Bonine, Sea-Bands or ginger chews. Odyssey of the Seas is a large and stable ship, but it’s always better to be prepared if you're sensitive to movement.

First impressions: A sleek, modern ship that doesn’t feel overwhelming

If you’ve never sailed on a Quantum Ultra Class ship before, Odyssey of the Seas might surprise you — in the best way. It’s one of Royal Caribbean’s newest vessels, and it feels modern, clean and thoughtfully designed from bow to stern. While it has all the bells and whistles you’d expect (tech-driven entertainment, skydiving simulator, massive activity zones), it also manages to feel a little more intimate than the Oasis-class megaships.

Even during busy sea days, there were always quiet corners to escape to — and that balance made a big difference.

Daytime vibes: Relaxation & adventure

Whether you’re in the mood for relaxation or adventure, Odyssey of the Seas offers something for everyone during the day. From peaceful retreats to thrilling activities, your day on board will be anything but boring.

One of the amazing shows onboard

The Solarium: A tranquil escape

For those seeking a more serene, adults-only environment, the Solarium is the perfect retreat. Tucked away at the front of the ship, this glass-enclosed sanctuary offers a peaceful atmosphere with panoramic ocean views. It’s the ideal place to relax with a good book, take a quiet nap or simply unwind. The heated pool and comfortable loungers make it a fantastic spot to escape from the hustle and bustle, especially on days when the weather is cooler and the main pool deck feels a little too chilly. The Solarium provides a calm, refined space to enjoy some much needed relaxation — without the crowds.

iFly: Experience the thrill of skydiving

If you’re seeking a more exhilarating daytime experience, iFly is a must! Located on the ship’s top deck, iFly is an indoor skydiving experience that simulates the sensation of free-fall, and it’s one of the most exciting activities aboard Odyssey of the Seas. Whether you're a first-time flyer or a seasoned skydiver, it’s an experience that’s safe and fun for all ages. We got an opportunity to do a session and it was a blast! Definitely something unique to ‘Skydive’ at sea!

Getting ready for iFly

After dark: Nightlife & entertainment

At night, Odyssey of the Seas truly shines. From large-scale production shows to intimate lounge performances, the variety and quality of entertainment were top notch. During our cruise, we saw a hilarious comedian, a mind-blowing illusionist, and enjoyed live music every single night.

  • Schooner Bar: A piano bar with a fun, singalong vibe. The pianist took requests and had the whole room singing everything from Billy Joel to Chappell Roan (Yes, I was the one who requested Pink Pony Club).

  • Crown & Compass Pub: A cozy, English-style pub featuring acoustic guitar sets, pints on tap and all-around great vibes.

There’s no shortage of things to do after dinner, and honestly? We stayed up way later than we expected just following the music from venue to venue.

A stellar Jazz performance by the Odyssey Orchestra

Dining: From casual bites to upscale nights

Food on Odyssey of the Seas was another high point. Whether you're a foodie or just looking for delicious vacation eats, there’s something for everyone onboard. Here are some of our top dining experiences:

  • Main Dining Room: Great service and a rotating menu every night, offering a variety of delicious options for every palate. We loved ordering multiple appetizers on nights when we weren't sure what we wanted so we could try them all.

  • Windjammer Café: A casual, buffet-style spot perfect for breakfast or lunch with lots of variety. It’s ideal for grabbing a quick bite between activities. Be cautious on sea days; it can get very busy for breakfast and lunch and be difficult to find a table. If you don't mind a more relaxed breakfast, the dining room is a great option. For lunch, try El Loco Fresh for quick Mexican food or Sorrentos for some Pizza.

Specialty dining (extra charges may apply):

  • Teppanyaki: If you’re looking for a dining experience that’s both fun and interactive, Teppanyaki is a total blast. The chefs put on a show, cooking up a storm right in front of you on a sizzling hot grill. It’s a great way to enjoy fresh, expertly cooked seafood, steak and chicken while having some laughs. The whole experience feels like a dinner party where everyone is having a good time — and the food? Absolutely delicious and a MUST if you are interested in specialty dining.

  • Wonderland: If you’re in the mood for something really different, Wonderland is an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere is whimsical, with the menu designed around fantastical ingredients and presentation. The dishes are creative (think "edible art") and as fun to look at as they are to eat. If you want a unique and adventurous dining experience, Wonderland checks all the boxes.

  • Chops Grille: For steak lovers, Chops Grille is a standout. We enjoyed perfectly cooked steaks, tender and flavorful, accompanied by a selection of delicious sides. The quality of the meat was top-notch, and it was clear that every dish was carefully prepared. If you’re craving a classic steakhouse experience with a refined twist, Chops Grille is the place to go.

Tip: To save some money, look out for pre-cruise deals on specialty dining packages. Royal Caribbean often offers discounts on dining packages if you book before your cruise starts, and it can be a great way to enjoy multiple specialty meals at a reduced price.

Ports & excursions: A quick note

We visited Perfect Day at CocoCay, Nassau, Bahamas, and Port Canaveral, Florida. Each stop offered a different flavor of adventure, whether you're looking to relax on the beach, explore a tropical island or enjoy a fun day in Florida.

Perfect Day at CocoCay: Royal Caribbean’s private island is a paradise for everyone, but we decided to splurge and enjoy a more exclusive, adults-only experience at Hideaway Beach. This serene and peaceful area is perfect for those looking for a more relaxed vibe, away from the crowds of the main island. We paid a little extra for access to this special section, and it was totally worth it.

A Perfect Day at Coco Cay

If you're not in the mood for the Hideaway Beach upgrade, there are still plenty of other things to do at CocoCay. You can visit Oasis Lagoon (the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean), or check out one of the amazing beaches around the island.

Nassau, Bahamas: In Nassau, you can dive into Bahamian culture with excursions like snorkeling, a historical walking tour or visiting a resort for the day. We opted to stay on the ship since we had just been to Nassau a few months prior. We found this to be a great time to get prime seats at the pool and use the ship's facilities since many passengers were on land for the day.

Port Canaveral: The stop in Port Canaveral is perfect for those looking to explore the Kennedy Space Center, one of the coolest attractions in Florida. If you’re into science or space history, this is an unforgettable experience. Alternatively, you can explore Cocoa Beach, just a short drive away, or check out local dining and shopping in Cocoa Village. We explored the local area and enjoyed frozen drinks at a restaurant near the port.

Final thoughts: Would I recommend Odyssey of the Seas out of Bayonne?

Absolutely. Odyssey of the Seas offers a fantastic mix of fun, relaxation and elevated experiences — without feeling overwhelming. It’s great for couples, groups of friends and families with kids or teens. The sailings out of Bayonne, NJ are especially convenient for East Coast cruisers who don’t want the hassle of flying. There was plenty to do and I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything by not leaving out of Florida.

If you're looking for a cruise that blends modern luxury with tons to do — and a few peaceful hideaways to escape the crowd — Odyssey is 100% worth checking out.

Need to know

Best times to travel:

  • Avoiding crowds: The best times to sail are during off-peak seasons, like late spring (April–early June) or fall (September–early November). You’ll get better prices, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Avoid peak summer months and holidays (Christmas, Spring Break) if you prefer a quieter cruise.

  • Weather considerations: Keep in mind that Bayonne, NJ, can be chilly at the start or end of your cruise — especially in early spring or late fall. Bring layers, and be prepared for cooler weather in the first few days and the last day as you sail through the Atlantic. Once you get to the Bahamas, the weather is tropical and warm, perfect for beach days and excursions.

Tips for first-time cruisers:

  • Don't miss the first day: The first day on board can feel overwhelming, with lots of things to see and do. Take some time to explore the ship, check out the dining options, and book specialty dining or show reservations early.

  • Pack for the weather: The weather can be variable — don’t forget motion sickness remedies for the days you’re at sea (especially if you’re prone to seasickness). Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler days in the Atlantic and swimwear for the warmer, tropical days.

  • Download the Royal Caribbean App: The app is key for navigating the ship’s daily schedule, booking last-minute excursions, reserving dining spots, and making dinner reservations.

  • Bring magnets: It might sound quirky, but bring magnets for your stateroom door! The doors are metal, so you can use magnets to personalize your space and make it easier to spot your cabin when you’re walking down the hall. Plus, it’s a fun way to add some extra personality to your room and make your cruise feel more like home.

Must-do activities on Odyssey of the Seas:

  • Teppanyaki: A fun, interactive dining experience where the chef performs tricks right at your table while cooking a delicious meal. It's a great way to bond with family or meet new people while enjoying fresh seafood, steak, and more.

  • The Solarium: This peaceful, adults-only retreat is a fantastic place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the ship. Enjoy heated pools, comfortable lounge chairs, and panoramic ocean views without the crowds.

  • The Odyssey Orchestra: If you’re a fan of live music, the Odyssey of the Seas orchestra is a must-see. This talented group of musicians delivers stunning performances across a broad spectrum of genres, from classical to contemporary hits, and everything in between. One of the standout features of their shows is their incredible horn section, which brings a dynamic energy to every performance. Whether they're playing classical compositions, musical theater favorites, or pop hits, their horn players can handle it all with an epic range of sound. The orchestra’s versatility adds an extra layer of excitement to the performances, making it a truly memorable experience.
