Quinta Carvalhas: Portugal’s Green Farm for Retreats, Creativity & Connection
Curator’s statement

Quinta Carvalhas is a rare retreat venue that cares for the facilitator as intentionally as it cares for every guest. Set about an hour from Lisbon, this family-owned farm combines flexible group accommodations, beautiful gathering spaces, nourishing cuisine, and non-riding horse experiences while keeping each organizer’s vision at the center. I would recommend it to wellness, creative, writing, and leadership groups seeking privacy, purpose, and a meaningful connection with the land.

Where to stay

I first came across Quinta Carvalhas through my work matching retreat leaders with properties that can support both the emotional intention and the practical reality of a group experience. What stood out immediately was the way the team speaks about the organizer’s role. Their on-site host is there to facilitate the facilitator’s work by preparing spaces, anticipating operational needs, and helping the day flow smoothly, which allows the retreat leader to remain present with the people who came to learn from them.

The property grew from Michelle and Richard Thomas’ two-year search across seven countries for a place where tranquility, beauty, connection, and restoration could exist together. They found the farm in Portugal’s Ribatejo region in 2016 and gradually developed its old stone buildings, agricultural landscape, and existing relationship with animals into a family-operated retreat center. The setting feels removed from daily life, but it remains practical for international groups because Lisbon Airport is approximately one hour away.

Retreat planners can reserve the full property or select a semi-exclusive wing, depending on group size and privacy needs. The farm’s varied spaces include the light-filled yoga shala, the larger Pine Hall, an art studio designed for expressive work, Cedar Lodge, informal lounges, a meditation garden, a pond and deck, a pool, pine-covered outdoor areas, and equine facilities. This variety makes the venue especially compelling for yoga, meditation, sound, writing, art, corporate leadership, and multidisciplinary retreats, because a program can move through different environments without ever leaving the property.

The pond deck

One of my favorite elements is the farm’s non-riding Tuning into Energy with Horses experience. Participants meet the herd from the ground and explore how horses respond to authentic energy, intention, and group dynamics without concern for titles or carefully managed professional identities. The activity can add unusual depth to a wellness retreat, while also creating a powerful experience for leadership teams that may not initially see themselves as traditional retreat travelers.

Food is another important part of the experience, with produce-led vegetarian menus designed to feel generous and nourishing rather than restrictive. The farm grows ingredients, produces its own olive oil, and can adapt menus around a group’s dietary framework when needs are discussed in advance. Yoga, meditation, massage, Reiki, sound experiences, art expression, mosaic making, cooking workshops, wine tasting, and a blindfolded sensory meal can also be incorporated, which makes Quinta Carvalhas a strong choice for facilitators who want a distinctive program while keeping their own teaching at the center.

Need to know

  • This is primarily a retreat and group venue rather than a conventional hotel for a brief overnight stop, so it is best for travelers attending an organized program or for leaders reserving a defined portion of the property.

  • The farm is approximately one hour from Lisbon Airport. Guests can travel by train to Mato de Miranda with advance pickup arrangements, or the property can assist with a private transfer. An Uber may work when traveling from Lisbon to the farm, but it should not be relied upon for the return journey from the countryside.

  • The current retreat offering includes exclusive use of the full property or semi-exclusive use of one wing with private bedrooms and dedicated venue spaces. Room configurations, exclusivity, and final capacity should be confirmed for each group because the property continues to expand and refine its accommodations.

  • Minimum stays vary by season and retreat format, with longer minimums commonly applying during the most popular spring, summer, and early autumn periods. Wellness facilitators often plan a year in advance, so groups with specific dates should begin the conversation early.

  • The kitchen’s central identity is vegetarian, but menus can be adapted for dietary frameworks and may include fish or meat by advance arrangement and at an additional cost. Outside chefs are not generally accepted, so any essential culinary requirements should be discussed before contracting.

  • Guests should be at least 16 years old, and personal pets cannot be accommodated while retreats are underway. The farm is home to its own horses and dogs, which are part of the atmosphere and should be considered for anyone with allergies or animal sensitivities.

  • Standard retreat terms may include a complimentary facilitator stay based on the number of paying guests, but this benefit, meal charges, and any second-facilitator arrangements should be confirmed in the final proposal.
