Site Visit: The Best of Andorra Hotels
Curator’s statement

Is it part of France? Is it Spanish? The answer is that while landlocked Andorra is an independent country, with a long and rich history involving its two neighbors, it truly has a culture all its own. It’s long been a worthy contender for couples and families seeking to ski and spend quality time together, but the warmer months offer endless outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and even golf. For the purpose of this report, I’ll start with the hotels in Andorra la Vella (the town center) where the focus is shopping, and work my way out to properties that offer privileged access to the area’s ski slopes.

Andorra fast facts

  • Currently headed by the Bishop of Urgell in Catalonia and the president of France, who act as co-princes of Andorra.

  • The official language is Catalan, but you’ll find that Spanish, Portuguese, and French are also commonly spoken.

  • The opening of the first ski lift in 1957 marked the beginning of a tourism boom. At last count, approximately nine million visitors flow through the country annually.

  • Andorra is about three hours driving from Toulouse or Barcelona. I took the latter route and wasn’t disappointed by the scenery. Stunning!

The Blackpine Hotel (Member of SLH, 1 MICHELIN Key)

I would absolutely recommend this stylish boutique hotel for the location in a quiet downtown square, as well as for the friendliness of the staff.

While the entrance and lounge are very... let’s say, “cozy,” the rooms are incredibly spacious. The suite I stayed in had a lovely living room area, a huge walk-in closet, and one of the largest hotel bathrooms I've seen, along with a very comfortable bed and a wonderful view.

The spa features a heated pool and sauna and does the trick after a morning run or afternoon of shopping. Guests can reserve the spa space for an hour.

Breakfast in the bistro is fairly basic, and perfectly fine if you have an early departure (as my group did). Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to have dinner or lunch here, but the menu does look enticing!

Andorra Park Hotel

Expansive is the word I would use here. From the lobby to the event spaces and sprawling gardens, the rooms are also spacious—even at entry level. Plus, all have serene views over the garden and out to the surrounding mountains.

It's a little stark on the design side, so it's worth noting that management will soon be adding some artwork and soft furnishings to the rooms to brighten them up. Still, it’s all good enough for visiting dignitaries! Macron was due to stay in the Presidential Suite the week after I visited.

Well-being is well taken care of with a sauna, jacuzzi, a large (indoor) heated pool, a Turkish bath, and spa treatment areas. Sports facilities don’t disappoint either with padel tennis courts and a fully equipped gym.

Making the property especially picturesque is the lovely outdoor pool (open in summer) that’s fed by mountain water.

With proximity to Andorra la Vella’s shopping and restaurants, this is perfect for couples, families, or large groups.

Park Piolets Mountain Hotel & Spa

This hotel is a gem and I enjoyed my short stay here! It's located near the ski area—about 30 minutes from Andorra La Vella and across the street from Sport Hotel Hermitage—so one can also take advantage of the restaurants there.

The chalet-inspired rooms are modern and cozy, with (my favorite) L'Occitane products in the bathrooms. There is a fantastic gym with early pool/spa area access—not all the five-star hotels in the area offer this.

Breakfast features local products, while the restaurants feature Chinese and Italian dishes. There's a lounge bar and a Champagne Terrace. Very friendly staff.

I would highly recommend this property for families and groups, whether composed of friends or corporate associates.

Sport Hotel Hermitage (1 MICHELIN Key)

There’s lot going on here to say the least! The property is vast, which also makes it a bit hard to navigate at first, but once you’ve mapped things out you can relax and plan your stay. But first… the rooms.

All are generous in size and boast tranquil views. My Junior Suite (their basic room category) had a large bathroom with separate shower and tub and didn’t feel too dated overall, however, it is in line to be renovated.

We did get to see the recently completed overhaul of the apartments in the hotel’s Residence wing, which revealed a chic and modern aesthetic without losing the cozy “winter lodge” mood. There's also a private five-bedroom, ski-in/out Mountain Chalet that would be perfect for a family or group of friends.

Restaurants put everything on the menu, from elevated Andorran cuisine at Michelin-starred IBAYA and excellent Japanese at Koy, to pizza and pub grub. We had a wonderful lunch at Sol I Neu Club and relaxed on the panoramic terrace afterwards. Booking rooms here means you're spoiled for choice for lunch and dinner. The hotel’s breakfast spread is pretty fantastic as well.

When it comes to activities, adults can drop the kids and teens off at their respective clubs and go about their day.

While winter is all about getting out on the slopes—whether that’s on skis, snowshoes, or snowmobiles—golfers can get their game on in the summer. Hermitage offers Europe’s highest altitude nine-hole golf course, located at an altitude of 2,250 meters.

To warm up, there’s a large spa (13+) with an extensive treatment menu and a well-equipped gym.
Not hard to see why this property is a hit for families and groups.

Grau Roig Boutique Hotel (1 MICHELIN Key)

This property screams romantic getaway. It's perfect for couples who appreciate luxury, food, and fine wine.

The 42 rooms exude alpine chic, with accents of sheepskin and cowhide that the owner, Dunia (whose father bought the hotel at auction in 1978), proudly informed us had been sourced cruelty-free. That kind of attention to detail is apparent throughout the two restaurants, cozy library bar, lovely spa, and breakfast nook that features an open fire. There’s also a huge outdoor terrace where guests can sit back, relax, and enjoy the season.

During winter, guests can ski in and out, rent skis, and effortlessly book an instructor. Grau Roig also works as a great base for summer hiking or biking.
