Curator’s statement
New Zealand is one of the most beautiful and dynamic places I’ve ever visited. The small country, about the size of California, holds desert, alps, glaciers, rainforest, beaches, dark sky zones, and more. There is so much to see and do on these two islands, and so many incredible luxury lodges to stay at when you’re visiting.

New Zealand has quietly become one of the world’s most coveted destinations for luxury lodge travel—not for flash, but for space, privacy, and an unmatched connection to nature. From alpine lakes and geothermal valleys to remote coastlines and vineyard-dotted hills, the country’s top lodges are destinations in their own right, offering deeply personalized service, immersive experiences, and a strong sense of place.
This itinerary-style guide highlights some of the best luxury lodges in New Zealand, blending iconic properties with experience-driven retreats for travelers who value design, discretion, and unforgettable landscapes.
Why choose a luxury lodge in New Zealand?
Luxury lodges here are not just hotels. They are fully immersive experiences. Most guests stay three to four nights per lodge, allowing time to slow down, explore privately, and enjoy curated adventures without constant packing and unpacking.
What to expect:
Standalone suites or villas with dramatic views
Highly personalized itineraries (often planned in advance)
Exceptional food and wine rooted in local sourcing
Easy access to nature without sacrificing comfort
This style of travel is ideal for honeymoons, milestone celebrations, multi-generational trips, and once-in-a-lifetime journeys.
The Rosewood Lodges are the most prominent in New Zealand and are incredible spots to stay on the North and South Island. Here are a few favorites.

Rosewood Cape Kidnappers
Rosewood Matakauri, Queenstown
Set along Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables rising behind it, Rosewood Matakauri offers an elegant alpine-meets-contemporary aesthetic. Days are spent on private wine tastings, scenic heli flights, or lake cruises, while evenings revolve around fireside dining and sunset views.
Best for: First-time New Zealand travelers, alpine scenery, wine lovers.
Recommended stay: 3–4 nightsRosewood Cape Kidnappers, Hawke’s Bay
Perched atop dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific, this lodge pairs world-class golf with vineyard access and rugged coastal beauty. The setting feels remote yet refined, with sweeping views at every turn.
Best for: Golf enthusiasts, couples, food and wine aficionados
Recommended stay: 2–3 nightsRosewood Kauri Cliffs, Bay of Islands
Surrounded by native bush and overlooking secluded beaches, Kauri Cliffs delivers barefoot luxury with polish. Guests enjoy private picnic beaches, coastal hikes, and effortless access to the subtropical north. The Bay of Islands is underrated, visited by fewer tourists, but absolutely should not be missed.
Best for: Honeymoons, relaxed coastal luxury
Recommended stay: 3 nightsEleven Experiences
Eleven Experiences was created by a savvy traveler who wanted to develop what he felt was missing in hospitality—ultra luxury in some harder-to-reach places with incredible and personalized service (also check out their location in Iceland at Deplar Farms!)The Lodge at The Hills at Arrowtown
Eleven Experience lodges are designed for travelers who want extraordinary access—private guides, heli-assisted adventures, and itineraries built entirely around personal interests. The Lodge at The Hills combines striking modern architecture with curated experiences ranging from alpine exploration to exclusive wine tastings. Arrowtown is close to Queenstown, so you can see the adventure hub, then return to your personal oasis.
(Author's note: Other Eleven Experience lodges in New Zealand focus heavily on fly-fishing and seasonal adventures, ideal for guests seeking deep immersion rather than sightseeing.)
Other lodges I love:
Huka Lodge, Taupō
One of the world’s most celebrated lodges, Huka Lodge is synonymous with quiet excellence. Set along the Waikato River near geothermal wonders, it blends heritage charm with impeccable service and refined dining. There's also a lot of great culture and history in Taupō, not to be missed!
Best for: Classic luxury lovers, repeat travelers
Recommended stay: 2–3 nightsThe Landings, Bay of Islands
For travelers who prefer space and privacy, The Landings offers architecturally stunning villas with full kitchens, expansive terraces, and access to beaches, golf, and sailing. It’s luxury with a residential feel. Lovely for families or for bringing your chef or nanny with plenty of privacy or space.
Best for: Families, multi-generational trips, longer stays
Recommended stay: 3–5 nights
