Curator’s statement
I often say that true luxury isn’t about excess; it’s about generosity. Generosity of time, of space, of experience. During my stay in Bhutan, andBeyond Punakha River Lodge embodied this idea more clearly than almost any lodge I’ve visited. Set in one of the country’s most fertile valleys, this is a place that doesn’t compete for your attention. Instead, it quietly gives you more than you expect: more moments outdoors, more thoughtful experiences, more ease in how your days unfold. As part of the andBeyond portfolio—a brand long associated with immersive, place-driven travel—Punakha feels like a natural extension of their philosophy, translated beautifully into a Bhutanese context.

Where it is & what it is
Farther west in the lush Punakha Valley of Bhutan sits andBeyond Punakha River Lodge, an intimate lodge set along the bed of the Mo Chhu River. It’s part of andBeyond, a brand rooted in safari heritage and experiential travel that excels at connecting guests to place, landscape, and culture.

Luxury tents that redefine comfort
Accommodation at andBeyond Punakha River Lodge comes in two forms: one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas, and a collection of beautifully designed luxury tents. It’s the tents, however, that best capture the spirit of this place.
Calling them “tents” almost feels misleading. These are permanent, generously sized structures with solid flooring, and every comfort you’d expect from a high-end lodge—just with the added intimacy of canvas walls and the sounds of nature filtering in gently at night. Large beds face outward, encouraging slow mornings and unhurried evenings. From your deck, the river flows quietly past, and the valley feels close in the best possible way.
One detail that stood out immediately was the butler’s pantry, a thoughtful addition that elevates the entire in-room experience. Room service is delivered discreetly through the pantry, meaning you never have to get out of bed to open the door—breakfast appears without interruption. It’s a small design choice, but one that speaks volumes about how carefully these tents are thought through.

What makes it exceptional
What stands out most here is value that actually feels valuable. andBeyond Punakha operates as a full-board lodge with additional perks—meals, drinks, selected activities, and many excursions are part of your stay.
A morning hike led us through emerald rice paddies up to a hilltop stupa. Breakfast awaited with a view that words struggle to capture. These are experiences that feel handmade, not packaged.

Sundowners that aren’t routine
Evenings here shift naturally into moments of pause. Sundowners are set up in different spots—sometimes beside the river, sometimes overlooking a rice field or a dzhong (Bhutanese fortress). This isn’t hospitality that wants to impress you with scale. It wants to impress you with thought.

Need to know
andBeyond Punakha River Lodge shows commitment to meaningful details, a refusal to settle for surface-level service, and a sense of belonging to the places they live in. andBeyond invites you in and refines your perception of value. The rooms, like the experiences, are extensions of that philosophy—spaces to unwind and to reflect. And when a hotel does either of those, it’s already done more than most.
