Land of the Rising Sun: Why Travel to Japan Should Be at the Top of Your Bucket List
Curator’s statement

Having lived and worked there in the past, I often get asked, “Why travel to Japan?” And the answer is not always simple. My love of Japan is a “feeling,” and feelings are often hard to describe, and even harder to explain. However, there are certain aspects of life there that are why I travel to Japan time and again.

A land of contradictions, Japan is a country that attracts travelers with its unique blend of ancient traditions and high-tech life, breathtaking natural beauty and neon-lit metropolises. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie or an adventurer, Japan has something to offer everyone. Here's why travel to Japan should be at the top of your bucket list:

Immerse yourself in a rich culture: Japan boasts a rich cultural heritage that's evident in everything from its magnificent temples and serene gardens to its traditional festivals — ask me about my favorite festival on Shikoku! — and intricate art forms. Try your hand at Japanese calligraphy (shodou), participate in a traditional tea ceremony or flower arranging class, or witness the elegance and artistry of a geisha performance in Gion, Kyoto's geisha district.

Get ready for a culinary adventure: Foodies, rejoice! Japan is a paradise for your palate. I have to admit that, before moving to Japan, I was not a fan of sushi, but the melt-in-your-mouth freshness of sushi and sashimi quickly changed that. But Japan is more than sushi and sashimi. The rich, flavorful ramen and delicate flavors of tempura make Japanese cuisine a symphony of taste and texture. Everyone should experience a lively night at an izakaya, a casual Japanese pub.

Experience unmatched hospitality: The Japanese people are renowned for their warmth, politeness and respect. You'll be greeted with a bow and a smile from the moment the airplane doors open and that warm welcome will continue throughout your stay. I have so many stories of kind locals helping me by pointing me in the right direction, or sharing local snacks and omiyage bought while traveling. This genuine hospitality adds an extra layer of charm to your Japanese adventure.

A landscape of diversity: Japan's beauty extends far beyond its bustling cities. Hiking the slopes of Mount Fuji — a majestic volcano and national symbol — is almost like a rite of passage for some overseas visitors to Japan as well as local adventure seekers. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Japanese Alps, go skiing in Hokkaido or swim in the clear water of Okinawa's tropical beaches. From snow-capped mountains and serene lakes to vibrant coral reefs and lush forests, Japan offers a diverse landscape unlike any other.

Activities for every explorer: Thrill-seekers can get their adrenaline pumping with white-water rafting, snowboarding down snow-capped mountains or scaling the heights of Mount Fuji. For the less adventurous, it's possible to enjoy nature by enjoying a soak in a natural hot spring (onsen) or exploring the hidden gems of the Japanese countryside. For the culturally curious, there are countless museums, historical sites and traditional festivals to discover.

A seamless travel experience: Japan boasts an excellent and efficient transportation system. My favorite way of getting around is the bullet trains that whisk you between cities at lightning speed (a JR Pass for a specific number of days may be an economical way of traveling, depending on itinerary), while clean and reliable subways and buses navigate bustling urban areas. Traveling in Japan is a smooth and stress-free experience, allowing you to focus on creating lasting memories. Just avoid the peak-hour rush of office workers going to work or returning home.
