Lake Como's Golden Triangle: Inside 3 Luxe Lakefront Hotels
Curator’s statement

Dive into the world of manicured lawns, Riva boats, and celebrity neighbors: Lake Como. On a recent trip, I stayed at three distinct icons that define Lake Como's luxury landscape: Passalacqua, Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como, and Grand Hotel Tremezzo. They all have their distinct personalities—the intimate, fairytale charm of Passalacqua; the grand, historic elegance of the Grand Hotel Tremezzo; and the modern refinement of the Mandarin Oriental. You can’t go wrong with any of them, but I can help you decide which would be the best fit for your next trip!

Passalacqua

Stepping into Passalacqua is like entering a real-life fairy tale, where the villa's historic glamour and charming beauty instantly transport you to another century. The exceptional staff ensure a truly magical experience, getting to know you so completely that you feel like a cherished family residing in the estate.

Dining at Passalacqua is an intimate treat, starting with the breakfast spread arranged in the kitchen, to the bites at the bar (incredible pizza and pasta dishes), to a beautiful meal in the elegant dining room. The caviar puff pastry is a must when eating in the formal dining room, and be sure to sip on a Passalacqua Spritz at least once during your stay.

The rooms at Passalaqua are all unique and elegantly designed. Two features in every room that blew me away: a custom-made trunk at the foot of the bed that houses a TV, operated with the touch of a button, and three Dyson hair tools in every bathroom. Complete your stay by enjoying the amazing spa and pool, with its super cool, historic tunnels leading to a tranquil spa and the lake itself. Staying here is a truly unique experience!

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como

Directly across the lake from Passalacqua, the Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, offers a striking blend of historic villa architecture and sleek modern luxury. Guests are treated to top-notch service and can experience the floating infinity pool that seamlessly blends into the lake. It’s magnificent! The rooms are very spacious and have a modern feel, aligning with their brand. The design creates a feeling that could be anywhere until you step onto the terrace and are reminded that you are in Italy.

When you are ready for some relaxation, indulge in the three-hour signature Essence of Lake Como treatment at the spa. I really enjoyed the cold plunge with the snowfall. Don’t miss the gelato cart for an afternoon treat! The stay is perfected by stunning bars (with amazing cocktails) and the amazing dining experience at the Michelin-starred, Asian-influenced restaurant, L'Aria. Dining here, while sitting outside overlooking the lake at night, was a highlight!

The Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Owned by the same family as Passalacqua, The Grand Hotel Tremezzo—the legendary "Grand Dame" of Lake Como—offers a historic, larger-scale luxury experience. Directly across the lake from Bellagio, the hotel has multiple restaurants, stunning spa facilities, and an iconic lakeside beach club. Ferries run throughout the day to take you over to the town of Bellagio; I suggest going there to grab lunch and do some shopping!

The indoor/outdoor spa pool is beautiful and is a new addition to the hotel. There are a lot of connecting room options, making this a great choice for families. The rooms are ornate, some with brighter palettes and some with a more neutral aesthetic. The marble bathrooms are tastefully done. I would highly recommend the lake-view rooms!

The breakfast buffet is extremely opulent, with an overwhelming amount of choices. There are also many other restaurants—everything from fine dining to a pizza bar, which makes it easy to remain on property. The candy bar is a hit with the kids! Down at the beach club, enjoy lunch or dinner at Da Giacomo al Como, which serves the freshest fish and beautiful lakefront views. I had the freshest branzino that was prepared tableside.

Need to know

A private boat tour is essential on Lake Como, offering the most dramatic vantage point to see all of the region's glamour. From the water, you'll get views of historic villas and the celebrity estates that line the shores. Be sure to ask your captain to point out all the celebrity villas!

Whether you seek Passalacqua's private family feel, the Mandarin Oriental's magnificent floating infinity pool, or the Grand Hotel Tremezzo's iconic beach club and Bellagio views, this trio delivers the pinnacle of Italian hospitality.
