The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection: The Hospitality-First Cruise Line
Curator’s statement

We recently wrapped up an incredible seven-night Caribbean sailing aboard Ilma, the second ship in the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fleet and our second voyage with the brand. Our first sailing was in the Mediterranean last summer. The moment we stepped onboard, we were greeted by familiar faces. Nearly half the staff from our previous voyage were still there. We later learned that roughly 30% of guests were repeat sailors. That is an impressive statistic for such a young brand and a testament to how they treat both guests and team members. RCYC clearly understands who they are and who they appeal to. What truly sets RCYC apart is simple. Hospitality comes first.

The beautiful Ilma

I will admit, I wondered whether our second voyage could possibly match the magic of the first. It did more than match it. It exceeded expectations in a completely different way. The surroundings felt comfortably familiar, yet we explored new islands, tried new dining venues, and experienced the ship from a different vantage point. That balance of novelty and familiarity is part of the magic.

Service that feels personal

Every interaction felt meaningful. From the bartender in The Library remembering our specific drink orders, to our in-suite coffee order arriving exactly as requested from the very first morning, the service is thoughtful without being theatrical.

Our suite attendant Russell once appeared with an ice bucket and said she thought I might enjoy champagne after my spa visit. She was absolutely right. That level of intuition is rare and unforgettable.

Infused spirits for craft cocktails

The onboard demographic shifts slightly by itinerary. The Caribbean skewed younger than the Mediterranean, which is not surprising given the pricing and timing. What stood out most was not age but mindset. Couples celebrating milestones, sisters traveling together, families, LGBTQ travelers, fellow travel professionals, and even other Tampanians all shared the same gracious and enthusiastic energy.

One particularly charming moment took place at Memori. A young couple brought their toddler near the sushi counter. When she reached toward the chef, she playfully handed her a piece of nori. Her delighted squeal drew smiles from everyone nearby. It was a small moment that perfectly captured the warmth on board.

Suites: A sampling from experience

All accommodations on Ilma are suites, and even the entry category feels elevated. There are several more room categories. The below are a sampling from our two voyages.

Terrace Suites, ~300 sq ft

These suites are anything but basic. They feature dual vanities, a sitting area, a private balcony, ample closet space, and dedicated Suite Ambassador service. There is no tub in this category. The living area flows seamlessly from bedroom to balcony.

Signature Suites, ~400 sq ft

This is our preferred category. The layout offers a truly separate living room and a dining table for two, which we enjoyed each morning before heading out on excursions. The balcony includes a daybed along with seating. We have stayed in suites 754 and 938 and slightly preferred 938 for its location, even though the balcony was smaller.

Grand Suites, ~560 sq ft

These suites include upgraded Bvlgari amenities, while Diptyque remains standard in other categories with a signature Ritz scent. Guests enjoy separate closets, expanded terraces, and a dining table for four. It is an ideal option for travelers wanting additional space and privacy.

Owner’s Suite, ~1,000 sq ft, with another ~500 sq ft terrace

The Owner’s Suite is spectacular, with an expansive outdoor terrace nearly half the size of the interior. New friends celebrating their thirty fifth anniversary hosted an intimate seafood gathering there one evening. The staff curated the event beautifully, and it felt like a private villa at sea.

  • Pro tip: Through STARS benefits, guests can inquire about discounted upgrade opportunities within thirty days of sailing. We utilized this strategy on a previous voyage and found it well worth exploring.

Dining: Refined and thoughtfully executed

The culinary program is a standout. The wine list in particular is impressive. Each evening I found multiple bottles I would confidently order for our table. That level of depth and intention is rare at sea.

Dining reservations are encouraged upon embarkation, especially for groups. Securing preferred times early makes the week seamless, though adjustments can always be made.

  • Seta Su Ilma: Led by Michelin-starred chef Fabrizio Trabocchi, this was one of the most thoughtfully executed multi-course tasting menus we have experienced, whether at sea or on land. Each course is explained with care, wine pairings are intentional, and returning guests are offered new dishes.

  • Memori: Asian fusion cuisine and a lively sushi bar atmosphere create one of the most enjoyable dining environments onboard.

Throughout the voyage, portions felt balanced, flavors refined, and execution consistently strong. We commented that our dinner could have easily been one of our favorite sushi experiences.

The onboard experience

Days at sea feel curated without feeling scheduled. Options include floral arranging with the onboard florist, luxury brand previews like Chanel and Hermes, whiskey and cigar tastings led by the tobaccoist, spa treatments, and wellness offerings.

When sea conditions allow, the marina opens at the aft of the yacht. Guests can paddleboard, kayak, swim directly from the yacht, or relax on floating platforms. It remains one of the most distinctive features of the fleet.

Evenings range from Broadway-caliber performers to DJs and themed celebrations such as En Blanc or Havana Night. These events are lively, joyful, and well-attended, and the engaging staff encourages dancing and celebrating under the stars.

Sunrise in St. Lucia

Port days are generous in length, allowing for deeper exploration. We have experienced both Ritz-curated excursions and privately arranged outings depending on preference and pricing. The flexibility is appreciated.

Guests also enjoy nightly surprises such as beach bags, spa gifts, sweet treats, and custom celebratory décor for birthdays or anniversaries.

A defining moment

During our sailing, Ilma was announced as the first cruise ship to receive a Forbes Five Star rating. The crew’s reaction was genuine. They were proud, humbled, and energized. You could feel how much the recognition meant to them.

Why I love it

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection understands exactly who it is. This is not a traditional cruise. It feels like a floating boutique hotel with a loyal following, exceptional service culture, and an experience built around intention.

Between the product, the Marriott Bonvoy benefits, and the anticipatory hospitality, RCYC continues to impress us in meaningful ways. We are already looking forward to sailing again.
