A Guide to Local Coffee in the Outer Banks
Curator’s statement

I’m sure I’m not the only one to say that I love a good coffee shop when I travel. Not only is it a great opportunity to fuel up for the day, but a local café can also give you a strong sense of the local community. The Outer Banks, barrier islands in North Carolina known for their laid-back vibe, is full of coffee shops, each with their own personality.

Ashley’s Espresso Parlour (Kill Devil Hills)

Part café and part art gallery, Ashley’s ranks among my favorite coffee locations. It has a cozy New Englandy feel. The staff are not only friendly, but also very knowledgeable when it comes to espresso drinks. Just ask, and they’ll give you a great recommendation, from traditional espresso drinks to the South Swell (their variation on a white mocha). They also roast and sell their own beans. Parking can be limited during busy times.

Our favorite barista, part of the wonderful Ashley's community!

Front Porch Café (various locations)

This chain has a vibe similar to mainstream coffee shops. The Manteo location actually has a cozy front porch where you can enjoy a variety of espresso and non-coffee drinks. They have a fun rotating seasonal menu, including drinks with their housemade vanilla whipped cream and strawberry cold foam.

Waveriders Café, Deli & Market (Nags Head)

Waveriders serves coffee and espresso drinks, along with an extensive sandwich menu. Breakfast and lunch offerings include both meat and vegetarian/vegan options. This place is full of energy and buzz! The seating area has several large tables—great for playing one of their board games with friends and family. Not a coffee drinker? Waveriders also has a fantastic tea selection. If you love locally crafted beer and wine, the market has you covered.

Duck’s Cottage (Duck)

A bookstore with a coffee shop—I’m sold! This historic building just off the main road at the Waterfront Shops is a cozy place to hang out. Every Wednesday night, this café hosts a “Hang Out And Read” event, where you can sip your coffee and chat with fellow book lovers.

Beads and Beans (Rodanthe)

For those heading farther south, Beads and Beans is a local favorite located on the main highway. Great coffee combines with friendly, knowledgeable staff to make this a good stop for your morning fix. If you’re wanting to find a local souvenir, this is the place to be! Their retail area is filled with fun local crafts such as Christmas ornaments and jewelry. While they are open every day, the hours are limited, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Between buying coffee and supporting Outer Banks artists at these stores, it’s easy to support local businesses. Try them all—you’re bound to find a favorite!

Need to know

During high season (the summer months), traffic and parking can be brutal. Be sure to leave enough driving time.
