Inside Hawai'i’s Most Beautiful Resort: 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay
Curator’s statement

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay feels like one of the most special luxury resorts in Hawai'i because it combines ultra-luxury with the raw natural beauty of Kauai. Set between dramatic green mountains and Hanalei Bay, the views are incredible and feel far beyond a typical beach resort experience. The property itself is beautifully designed, with amazing dining, a world-class spa, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it feel like a hidden gem. It’s the kind of place that feels both elevated and deeply connected to nature.

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay truly stands out as one of the most unique luxury resorts in Hawai'i because of how seamlessly it blends wellness, nature, and elevated luxury. Unlike many Hawaiian resorts that focus primarily on the beach, this property is built directly into Kaua'i’s dramatic mountainside, creating incredible panoramic views of both the lush cliffs and Hanalei Bay. The entire hotel has an indoor-outdoor feel with beautiful landscaping throughout, making you feel constantly connected to nature. If possible, I highly recommend booking an ocean- or bay-view room because the views are spectacular and make relaxing in your room feel like part of the experience itself.

The food here was honestly some of the best I’ve had across all of the Hawaiian islands. Sandbox, the poolside restaurant, became one of my favorite lunch spots for its delicious burgers (including a great veggie burger), homemade pizzas, salads, and fries. 1 Kitchen was another standout, offering stunning indoor-outdoor dining with incredible views, an amazing breakfast buffet, and a more elevated upscale dinner experience at night. One thing guests absolutely should not miss is Welina Terrace—the sunset views are unbelievable, and I highly recommend making a reservation timed around sunset for cocktails and dinner.

One of the biggest highlights of the property is its incredible wellness focus. The gym is easily one of the largest and best hotel gyms I’ve ever experienced, and the resort offers excellent complimentary and à la carte classes including yoga, Pilates, and strength training. The spa is also exceptional, and I highly recommend booking a massage. One of my favorite details is that steam and sauna access are included for the entire day when you book a treatment, making it easy to turn your spa appointment into a full wellness day. The resort also offers unique wellness amenities like a hyperbaric chamber, meditation pod, infrared sauna, and other recovery-focused experiences that really set it apart from other luxury resorts.

Beyond the resort itself, the location is fantastic. The beach access is easy and swimmable without being overly rocky, and the property is perfectly located near both Princeville and Hanalei Bay. Hanalei town is cute for shopping and casual lunch. The hotel offers a wonderful neighborhood guide with recommended restaurants, activities, hikes, and more! Small details throughout the stay also made the experience feel special, from the delicious welcome drink to thoughtful room design elements like the lava rock showers. One note for clients: If having a bathtub in your room is important, I would recommend requesting one in advance, as not all room categories include them automatically. The hotel had a secluded and peaceful atmosphere—catering to many honeymoons, babymoons, and small babies—but not filled with children like many other Hawaiian hotels can feel. Overall, this hotel is one of my favorites in all of Hawai'i!
