Passalacqua Lake Como Hotel: Review of the Iconic Luxury Stay on Lake Como
Curator’s statement

On the quiet western shore of Lake Como, in the small village of Moltrasio, Passalacqua is one of the most intimate and elegant hotels on the lake. Housed in a restored 18th-century villa, the property opened as a hotel in 2022, but has a history that stretches back centuries. With only 24 suites spread across three buildings, the place feels less like a traditional hotel and more like a private aristocratic estate overlooking the lake. Everything here revolves around the Italian idea of "villeggiatura"; slow summer living, long lunches, and time spent enjoying the landscape rather than rushing through it.

Where to stay in Lake Como

Unlock perks by contacting Noboru Travel to book your trip.

Location

Passalacqua sits in Moltrasio, a small village about 10 to 15 minutes north of Como town on the western side of the lake and about a 30-minute train ride from Milan. The location is quieter than the busier eastern towns like Bellagio, making it ideal for travelers who want privacy and uninterrupted lake views.

The villa itself is perched slightly above the water, surrounded by seven acres of terraced gardens, olive groves, and cypress trees. From here, guests can explore Lake Como by boat, visiting nearby villages such as Bellagio, Varenna, or Tremezzo.

Rooms & suites

Passalacqua has just 24 keys, each individually designed and spread across three buildings:

  • The Villa: The grand main house with frescoes and high ceilings

  • The Palazz: Former stables with exposed beams and a cozier atmosphere

  • Casa al Lago: A lakeside cottage ideal for families or private stays

Room with lake view

The most famous accommodation is the Bellini Suite, featuring a vaulted music room where the eponymous composer once played piano.

In-room details include: marble bathrooms with large soaking tubs, custom-made furniture and antiques, hidden televisions and high-end technology, and a complimentary minibar with house-made treats.

Most rooms offer direct views of Lake Como and the surrounding gardens.

Dining

Dining at Passalacqua is intentionally relaxed and flexible. Instead of a single formal restaurant, guests can eat in several locations around the property, from the villa’s elegant dining rooms to candlelit terraces overlooking the lake.

The cuisine focuses on refined Italian cooking with a homemade feel, sometimes described as “alta cucina di casa”—elevated home cooking.

Breakfast is a highlight and often served outdoors with views across the lake.

Lunch: pasta with butter sauce and caviar

Experiences & facilities

There’s plenty to do on the property:

  • Outdoor pool overlooking Lake Como

  • Spa with various treatment options

  • Lake-view gym in an olive grove

  • Clay tennis court and bocce court

  • Yoga classes and cooking workshops

  • Private boat excursions around the lake, which is one of the best ways to explore Como’s historic villas and villages.

Verdict

Passalacqua is one of the most distinctive hotels on Lake Como—not because it is the largest or most famous, but because it feels exceptional. With just 24 suites, historic interiors, and gardens that cascade down to the lake, the hotel captures the atmosphere of a grand Italian villa from another era. It’s best suited for travelers who want privacy, design, and a slower pace of travel, rather than a busy resort experience. For many visitors, Passalacqua isn’t just a place to stay on Lake Como—it’s the kind of hotel where the property itself becomes the destination.
