Where to stay in Australia

The Whitsunday Islands are one of Australia's dreamiest beach destinations.

Australia is much larger than you might think. In fact, it’s 95 percent of the size of the continental USA (the lower 48 states), so seeing every region isn’t an option for most travelers. Here’s where you should visit according to your personality.

Western Australia

We don’t talk about Western Australia enough! With remote swimming coves, crystal-clear water, and year-round sunshine, it’s paradise for beach lovers. If you like to swim, surf, snorkel, or simply sunbathe in the Aussie rays, this is your place.

Places to know:

  • Perth: The sunniest capital city in Australia, with a relaxed vibe, thriving food scene, and access to stunning beaches.

  • Margaret River: A beloved wine region known for premium vineyards, gourmet food, surf beaches, and forested walking trails.

  • Ningaloo Reef: One of the best places in the world to swim with whale sharks, and a more laid-back alternative to the Great Barrier Reef.

Travel tip: Western Australia can be perfectly combined with a trip to Asia. Perth is actually closer to Bali than it is to Sydney!

Northern Territory

The Northern Territory is where Australia’s ancient spirit comes alive. It’s a place of red deserts, sacred sites, crocodile-filled wetlands, and unforgettable outback adventures.

Places to know:

  • Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: Home to the world-famous red rock, Uluru, and the lesser-known (but equally stunning) Kata Tjuta domes. A spiritual heartland.

  • Kakadu National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage site rich in Aboriginal culture, waterfalls, and crocodile-studded wetlands.

  • Darwin: A tropical capital city with a relaxed vibe, open-air markets, Indigenous art, and access to top-end adventures.

Travel tip: Nestled beneath the glittering stars of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, you’re actually closer to the International Space Station than to the closest McDonald’s location.

South Australia

South Australia is a hidden gem for foodies, wine lovers, and wildlife seekers. The region offers a mix of coastal beauty, outback adventures, and world-renowned wine regions, all without the crowds.

Places to know:

  • Adelaide: A stylish, compact capital filled with festivals, art, and access to top wine regions.

  • Barossa Valley: One of Australia’s most iconic wine regions, famous for bold Shiraz and long, lazy lunches.

  • Kangaroo Island: A rugged, remote island brimming with native wildlife, pristine beaches, and artisan producers.

Travel tip: South Australia locals are known to picnic at wineries, so bring a basket and enjoy lunch on the lawn with a bottle straight from the cellar door.

Victoria

Victoria may be one of Australia’s smallest states by size, but it certainly packs a punch. It's perfect for travelers who want a mix of city buzz and nature escapes all within a few hours’ drive.

Places to know:

  • Melbourne: Australia’s cultural heart, known for its laneways, coffee culture, world-class food, festivals, and fashion.

  • The Great Ocean Road: An epic coastal drive filled with jaw-dropping cliffs, charming surf towns, and natural wonders like the Twelve Apostles.

  • Yarra Valley: A lush wine and foodie region just an hour from Melbourne, famous for cool-climate wines and elegant farm-to-table dining.

Travel tip: Melbourne’s famously unpredictable weather means you can experience four seasons in one day. Layers will be your best friend!

Tasmania

Tasmania is Australia’s hidden gem. The island is perfect for travelers who love hiking, fresh seafood, and discovering places that feel untouched and wild.

Places to know:

  • Hobart: A charming harbor city with a blend of heritage architecture, creative energy, and access to incredible day trips.

  • Freycinet National Park: Home to the stunning Wineglass Bay, with white sand beaches, crystal-clear water, and epic hikes.

  • Bruny Island: A foodie haven and wildlife paradise just off the coast of Hobart, perfect for a day trip.

Travel tip: Come hungry! Tasmania is known for its artisan cheeses, fresh seafood, cool-climate wines, and boutique distilleries.

New South Wales

New South Wales (NSW) is Australia’s most iconic state—home to Sydney, legendary beaches, rolling wine country, and dramatic national parks.

Places to know:

  • Sydney: Australia’s largest city is famous for the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and world-class beaches like Bondi and Manly.

  • Blue Mountains: Just a couple of hours from Sydney, this dramatic region features towering cliffs, waterfalls, and ancient rainforests.

  • Byron Bay: A boho-chic beach town with surf culture, holistic wellness, and celebrity sightings.

Travel tip: Get your adrenaline pumping with panoramic views on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It’s an unforgettable way to see the city.

Queensland

Queensland is Australia’s sunshine state. Think: tropical paradise filled with palm-fringed beaches, World Heritage wonders, and lush rainforests. It’s perfect for travelers seeking adventure, natural beauty, and a laid-back lifestyle.

Places to know:

  • The Great Barrier Reef: The world’s largest coral reef system and a bucket-list destination for snorkeling, diving, and marine life encounters.

  • Whitsunday Islands: A dreamy island chain known for white-sand beaches like Whitehaven Beach and luxury stays in places like Hamilton Island.

  • Brisbane: The largest city in the region with a growing food and arts scene and easy access to beaches and hinterland.

Travel tip: If you're visiting between November and May (stinger season), a lycra suit is essential for safe swimming in North Queensland’s tropical waters.

Need to know

The key to a successful Australia adventure is pairing two to three complementary regions based on your travel style, season, and interests. Here are some smart combinations to make the most of your time:

  • Classic east coast combo: Sydney, Great Barrier Reef & Melbourne
You’ll hit the iconic trifecta—Sydney’s harbor and beaches, the reef’s underwater wonders, and Melbourne’s laneways and culture.

  • Tropical escape: Queensland & Northern Territory
Pair reef and rainforest in Queensland with the red deserts and Aboriginal culture of the NT. Think: snorkeling one day, Uluru sunset the next!

  • Coastal wine country: South Australia & Western Australia
Perfect for off-the-beaten-path travelers, first visit Barossa Valley and Kangaroo Island in SA, then head to Margaret River and the beautiful coastline in WA.

For additional pairings and custom itinerary planning, please get in touch! I would love to help you design the Australian adventure of a lifetime.
