Curator’s statement
If you’re not sure where to start with Costa Rica, the Peninsula Papagayo is ideal for a myriad of reasons. Only 30 minutes from the Liberia Airport, this lush collection of hotels has something for everyone. No matter where you stay, you’ll feel immersed in the rainforest setting, dining side by side with howler monkeys (the cute kind). Keep reading and I’ll tell you why I adore the Andaz Papagayo for style, the Four Seasons for the kiddos, and Nekajui for something a little magical.

Andaz Papagayo: Laid-back sophistication

Andaz 2 Bedroom Villa
The Andaz perfectly balances relaxed vibes with refined touches. I was lucky enough to receive an upgrade to a spacious two-bedroom villa with a private plunge pool—a dream for unwinding while listening to the rain. With laundry, a full kitchen, and plenty of space, a family would have just the right amount of space.
The details here matter: I was impressed by Derrick’s attentiveness to concierge service and mixing cocktails with Cristiano and Johnny. The mixology class was such a highlight: lively, educational, and downright fun. You’ll mix and sample at least 2–3 cocktails, leaving you buzzy and ready for a villa nap. (Order the off-menu Tico Collins!)

Dinner at Ostra was another standout moment, with the chef delighting us with an off-menu sushi boat that made the evening feel extra special.
If you’re craving a change of scenery, it couldn’t be easier to hop on the free and fast water taxi to their beach club, Casa de Playa. The Andaz is ideal for travelers seeking a boutique, experiential, and casually luxurious stay.
Four Seasons Costa Rica: Family-friendly elegance

Four Seasons villa
Touring the Four Seasons has made it clear why it’s a top choice for families. Every detail is curated for comfort and elegance, and the mezze platter from Virador Beach Club is divine. If you are a beach baby, this is your hotel—soft sand, calm waters, and plenty of space for kids to play or adults to relax.
With its thoughtful amenities for all ages, the Four Seasons delivers a seamless experience for families looking for both adventure and downtime.
The residential villas are also quite notable. Perfect for multi-generational groups or friends who want to feel like they’ve arrived, the Pacifico and Prietta villas are modern, exclusive, and spacious.
Ritz-Carlton Reserve Nekajui: Unforgettable exclusivity

Ritz Carlton Nekajui Ambar
The Ritz-Carlton Reserve was a showstopper. Its “treehouse” vibe creates a serene, almost fantastical escape, with design influences reminiscent of Southeast Asia, and a touch of White Lotus chic.
No doubt the spa is poised to become a must-visit on the international stage, featuring incredible, sprawling views and Latin America’s largest hydrotherapy pool. Every aspect—from the intimate setting to world-class amenities—makes this a truly unforgettable experience, perfect for a romantic getaway or a fully immersive luxury escape.
For the true insiders: Cooper’s speakeasy is unlisted—ask me how to get in, I got you.

Peninsula Papagayo: A destination for all
The Peninsula Papagayo offers something for every traveler. Families will love the calm beaches, kids clubs, and activities, couples will revel in the secluded elegance, and adventure-seekers will have easy access to ATV tours, snorkeling, kayaking, and other water sports.
The combination of lush tropical landscapes, culinary experiences, and diversity of accommodations make this peninsula an unforgettable destination for all.
Need to know
Costa Rica's rainy season is May–November, but don't let this stop you. Better value, more accommodation choice, and fewer people make for a wonderful stay.
I went in August, and while it showered most evenings, it was brief and highlighted how special this destination is with its natural setting. Dining with the sound of rain in the background is truly special!
