Curator’s statement
Last week I had the opportunity to take a break from NYC’s frigid temperatures, to visit Barbados with my family. In addition to spending some amazing quality time with my husband and two young children, I also conducted several hotel site visits to share a POV on how to select the best property for my clients on the island.

What I was most impressed about Barbados, was the amount of amazing family-run, boutique properties. Corporate, international hotel chains were not nearly as prevalent as on other nearby islands… which I found charming. See below for my view on some of the island’s top properties.
And also, here are some helpful non-negotiable spots to visit if you bring your kids to Barbados (which I highly recommend!):
Barbados Wildlife Reserve, where you can meet monkeys, turtles, and peacocks.
St. Nicholas Abbey and Steam Railway, to see the historic train, stroll through an old sugar plantation, and sample local rum.
Oisten’s Friday night fish market, for local fish, dancing, and tons of energy.
Deia Beach Club—a white sand, full-service premium beach club with an amazing restaurant, and tropical pool.
Crane Beach is our favorite beach on the island, with pink sands, perfect views, and a great fish shack for lunch.
Miami Beach—sprawling beach, with casual food trucks and a perfect cove to swim with little ones.

The Plantation House at St. Nicholas Abbey—a perfect family activity
And here are the noteworthy hotels:
Sandy Lane is the gold standard of Caribbean luxury and one of the most iconic resorts in the world. This legendary property seamlessly caters to a wide range of travelers, from families to golfers to families of golfers and spa junkies. The service is refined, intuitive, and deeply personalized, creating an atmosphere where guests feel both indulged and completely at ease.

Golfers have access to world-class courses while non-golfers gravitate toward the expansive spa, one of the most celebrated in the Caribbean. Families of golfers will find that Sandy Lane strikes the rare balance of elite amenities with genuine warmth, making it a resort where everyone from children to grandparents feels equally catered to. They have an insanely loyal customer base, and a loyalty program that targets multigenerational families that spend $250K with the hotel over their lifetime.
The Coral Reef Club is a timeless Caribbean classic that blends elegance with a relaxed, welcoming energy. The beautifully appointed rooms, lush gardens, and idyllic pool and beachfront setting create an atmosphere that feels both refined and effortlessly comfortable. There is just the right amount of action, enough to feel lively but never overwhelming, making it ideal for couples of all ages seeking a romantic yet fun escape.
Service is a standout here thoughtful consistent and deeply personal, which explains the hotel’s exceptionally strong returning guest rate. The indoor and outdoor spa is one of the island’s most tranquil sanctuaries and a true highlight of the experience.

The Sandpiper is a charming family-run resort that radiates warmth and authenticity. Its low-key relaxed vibe makes it perfect for travelers who value comfort, friendliness, and a sense of home over high-gloss luxury. The atmosphere is intimate and unpretentious with a calm, easygoing beach scene that feels refreshingly low-maintenance.
This is an ideal choice for families or couples who want a peaceful beachfront stay without formality where days unfold naturally, service feels genuine, and the focus is simply on enjoying Barbados at a slower, more personal pace.

Cobbler’s Cove is the ultimate boutique hideaway for rest, relaxation, and refined indulgence. Best suited for adults, whether couples or friends traveling together, or groups of gal pals, this intimate property excels at creating a serene, stylish escape. Pool lovers will feel especially at home here as the atmosphere encourages lingering afternoons and unhurried days. The food program is a standout with a strong emphasis on fresh local ingredients guests should not miss the catch of the day or the signature okra dishes.

Cobbler’s Cove’s house boat, complimentary daily rides for guests
One of Cobbler’s Cove’s most delightful perks is daily access to the hotel’s private house boat perfect for casually running errands up and down Barbados’ coast in the most charming way possible. It should be noted that this hotel does not have a full beach club on the sand, yet its sea-front beds do have incredible sea views.

The Crane Resort is one of Barbados’ most visually striking properties famed for its dramatic setting and breathtaking views, and village-like feel. The white and “pink” sand beach below the cliffs is one of the island’s most memorable, making this a dream destination for beach lovers. Various room types and pools make it well-suited for families, while the panoramic ocean vistas add a wow factor that appeals to travelers of all ages. This is a resort for guests who prioritize scenery, space, and a sense of place where every glance out over the coastline feels like a postcard moment.

Need to know
Barbados is truly an incredible island, obviously its known best for its beaches. However, the expansive diversity in boutique, family run hotels is also incredible, and differentiates it from other Caribbean islands where the luxury hotel scene is more dominated by global brands.
