Hotel AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado Lisbon: Site Visit to a Lovely Boutique Hotel in the Heart of Lisbon
Curator’s statement

The AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado (Lisbon), with its 28 rooms and suites, is located in a central, yet whisper-quiet square of the city — Praça do Município. Cars are not permitted in the beautifully serene plaza (making it quiet, relaxed) aside from taxis dropping off people at the hotel and cars using the underground garage. You’ll enjoy wonderful cuisine (and a wonderful wine menu) at Delfina - Cantina Portuguesa, with a beautiful view of the peaceful plaza from the patio seating.

AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado is wonderful property with a lovely, attentive and welcoming staff - and the most perfect tranquil location right in the heart of the city. Its central location, fabulous breakfast spread and wonderful staff can’t be beat. With a 10-star staff headed by manager Luisa Gomes, the dedicated 24/7 concierge service is amplified by an AlmaLusa App that includes varied itineraries, walking guides, restaurant recommendations, cool shops and more. The App includes directions (Google Maps, Apple Maps & one-click Waze). Guests are also given a complimentary smartphone to use (with 30 minutes of free talk time per day) - super convenient and an easy way to quickly get acquainted with the city.

Ms. Gomes shared that the hotel group was further expanding to include a 25-room property, AlmaLusa Alfama, housed in a 12th-century building and overlooking the Tagus River (just a few blocks from the Baixa/Chiado location). The Alfama location is also prime - close to the majestic Se de Lisboa Cathedral and winding streets of this quintessential Lisbon neighborhood. This hotel is scheduled to open at the end of summer. And for those headed to the beach, AlmaLusa has another terrific property in Comporta (a 15-minute walk to the beach).

Look / feel

lobby area with brown furniture

Lobby: The building was constructed in the 18th century (and rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake), so the exterior is that of a well-polished palazzo. The lobby / lounge at check-in has original stone floors, leather and cane chairs and rattan baskets. Super convenient is the fact that the lobby / lounge opens into Delfina (the restaurant where breakfast is also served).

Rooms: Clean and crisp. And did I mention the beds? Heavenly! 100% luxury percale cotton sheets one 8cm feather bed, anti-allergic duvets and feather pillows. And … a pillow menu!

AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado has a range of room options including a triple room option and spacious suite options (39 square meters) with kitchenette. As such, this property is perfectly suited for families.

Bathrooms: Compact, but complete with a fantastic shower head, plush towels, nice bathrobes and slippers.

The location is fantastic with lots of sites and special eateries within close proximity (the Lisboa Welcome Center, tour kiosks and tuktuk tours are just four blocks away, Praca do Comercio).

Note: a public parking garage in the plaza is just a few steps from the hotel’s front door.
