The Ultimate Luxury Beach Guide to Saint Maarten: Where Paradise Meets Perfection
Curator’s statement

Saint Maarten is a place where magic seems to weave itself into everyday moments. From my first visit years ago (which happened to include my engagement!) to my annual returns, this dual-nation island continues to captivate me with its perfect blend of cultures, flavors and adventures. Each time I return, I discover something new – whether it's a hidden beach cove, a local café serving the most amazing johnnycakes or simply a different way the sunset paints the sky over Orient Bay. It's an island that feels both familiar and fresh, where every visit writes a new story while honoring the memories of those that came before.

A guide to Saint Maarten's best beaches

Adventure seekers can explore Saint Maarten's hidden coves and dramatic coastline by jet ski, offering a unique perspective of this dual-nation paradise.

Orient Bay (French side)
Widely recognized as the most developed beach on the French side of Saint Maarten, Orient Bay offers an unparalleled beach experience with its crystal-clear waters and comprehensive amenities. Visitors can enjoy multiple beach clubs offering full service, alongside a variety of restaurant options. Water sports enthusiasts will find plenty of rental equipment available, while those seeking relaxation can take advantage of comfortable loungers and umbrellas. While the beach offers a premium experience, be prepared for larger crowds during peak season and slightly higher prices compared to other beaches on the island.

Where crystal waters meet powder-soft sand, Saint Maarten's beaches offer nature's perfect invitation to slow down and savor island time.

Mullet Bay (Dutch side)
For those seeking a more tranquil beach experience, Mullet Bay on the Dutch side presents pristine white sand and calm waters ideal for swimming. This less crowded alternative to Orient Bay offers a more laid-back atmosphere. While amenities are more basic, including chair and umbrella rentals, local food vendors and public restrooms, the peaceful environment more than makes up for the limited facilities. Note that parking can be challenging during busy periods.

Simpson Bay Beach
This expansive stretch of coastline is perfect for beach walks and features multiple bars and restaurants along its length. Simpson Bay stands out with its excellent beach clubs, including the highly-rated Roxxy Beach (4.5/5). Visitors can enjoy full-service restaurants, cabana rentals and water sports equipment rental. While some areas may be less maintained, and waves can be stronger than at other beaches, the variety of amenities and activities makes it a popular choice for many visitors.

Cupecoy Beach
Known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and spectacular sunset views, Cupecoy Beach offers a more secluded atmosphere for those seeking privacy. While facilities are limited to basic chair rentals and a single beach bar, the natural caves provide unique shade opportunities. Visitors should be aware that waves can be strong, but the stunning scenery and peaceful environment make it a favorite for those seeking natural beauty over amenities.

Great Bay Beach (Philipsburg)
Located conveniently close to the cruise port, Great Bay Beach combines easy access with extensive amenities. Visitors can enjoy multiple beach clubs, full-service restaurants, water sports rentals and comfortable beach chair and umbrella service. While the proximity to the cruise port means the beach can become quite busy on ship days, the variety of shopping options nearby makes it an excellent choice for those who want to combine beach time with other activities.

Colorful umbrellas dot the golden shoreline of Great Bay Beach, where the bustling boardwalk creates the perfect backdrop for a day of sun, shopping and Sint Maarten spirit.

Where cruise ships meet culture on Great Bay Beach's famous boardwalk – the perfect blend of Caribbean charm and island energy in the heart of Philipsburg.

Hidden gem: Plum Bay (Baie aux Prunes)
For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, Plum Bay offers a secluded paradise with golden sands and clear turquoise waters. This hidden gem is perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts and those seeking a more private beach experience. While facilities are limited, the pristine environment and uncrowded atmosphere make it an ideal spot for visitors looking to experience Saint Maarten's natural beauty in its purest form.

Maho Beach
World-famous for its unique airplane-watching experience, Maho Beach sits at the end of Princess Juliana International Airport's runway, offering an unforgettable spectacle as aircraft land just meters above sunbathers. The beach itself features soft sand and crystal-clear waters, with the Sunset Beach Bar providing front-row seats to the aviation show. While the beach is relatively small, it offers full amenities including beach chairs, umbrellas and several restaurants. Be prepared for crowds during peak landing times, and note that jet blast from departing planes can be strong. Best times to visit are mid-morning and late afternoon when most large aircraft arrive.

Where Caribbean charm meets duty-free paradise: Philipsburg's historic streets invite you to wander from beach to boutique, discovering centuries-old architecture and modern luxury along the way.
