Conrad Maldives Rangali Island: Luxury Escape for Couples and Families
Curator’s statement

The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island exceeded every expectation I had for a luxury resort. While the Maldives is often known as one of the world's premier honeymoon destinations, I discovered that the Conrad offers just as much for families as it does for couples. From the moment our seaplane touched down beside the dock and staff greeted us with cold towels and fresh juice, it was clear this was a resort built around genuine hospitality, not just scenery. The resort creates an experience that's difficult to replicate anywhere else.

Getting there

The journey to Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is part of the experience. After arriving at Malé International Airport, guests are escorted to the Conrad lounge to relax while waiting for their seaplane transfer. The approximately 30-minute scenic flight over the Indian Ocean is breathtaking, offering endless views of tiny coral atolls and brilliant turquoise lagoons that immediately remind you why the Maldives is unlike anywhere else in the world. Upon arrival, the welcome is warm and genuinely personal: staff greet guests on the dock with cold towels and refreshments before introducing them to the island and escorting them to their villa.

The property

Conrad Maldives spans two naturally formed islands connected by a 500-meter bridge. Rangalifinolhu is the resort's main island, home to the reception, family pool, Kids' Club, Beach Villas, and many of the dining venues. Across the bridge, Rangali Island offers a quieter atmosphere with the adults-only Quiet Zone pool, Aaraha Champagne Bar, and many of the resort's overwater villas. Guests are provided bicycles, making it easy and fun to ride between the islands throughout the day. I loved biking everywhere instead of relying on golf carts. It adds to the relaxed island atmosphere and makes exploring both islands enjoyable.

The villas

I stayed in one of the resort's iconic overwater villas and woke up every morning to uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean. The villa was spacious, beautifully designed, and featured direct access into the ocean. I also toured several of the Beach Villas, and they completely changed my perception of staying on land in the Maldives. These villas offer exceptional privacy while opening directly onto powder-soft white sand beaches with calm swimming areas. For families traveling with children, I think the Beach Villas are the better choice—kids have room to play, parents have plenty of space to spread out, and everyone still enjoys immediate access to the water without stairs or deep ocean entry. One of the property's most famous accommodations is The Muraka, an extraordinary two-level residence featuring an underwater master bedroom surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass. Sleeping beneath the ocean while reef fish swim around your bedroom is one of the most exclusive experiences available anywhere in the world.

Dining

Conrad Maldives has multiple restaurants spread across both islands, offering everything from casual beachfront lunches to world-renowned fine dining. The resort's signature experience is Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, the world's first all-glass underwater restaurant. Dining five meters below sea level while colorful tropical fish, stingrays, and reef sharks swim overhead is one for the memory books—even before the meal begins, the setting alone makes it one of the most unique dining experiences anywhere.

Sunset Grill and Ithaa

Other standout restaurants include Atoll Market for extensive international breakfast and themed dinner buffets, Mandhoo Spa Restaurant for healthy, fresh cuisine overlooking the lagoon, Ufaa for exceptional contemporary Chinese cuisine, Sunset Grill for fresh seafood with spectacular sunset views, and Vilu Restaurant for Mediterranean-inspired dishes overlooking the water. Casual beach dining, poolside service, and several bars round out the variety throughout the stay. A recent addition to the property is Aaraha Champagne Bar, designed as the resort's premier sunset venue specializing in premium champagnes by the glass paired with luxury canapés like caviar, lobster, and foie gras is one of the best places on the property to watch the sunset.

Pools & relaxation

I spent much of my free time at the adults-only infinity pool on Rangali Island, and it quickly became my favorite place to unwind. The atmosphere is peaceful and sophisticated, with attentive pool service, comfortable loungers, and panoramic ocean views. There's also a pool on the main island for families, and many of the villas have their own private pool, giving both couples and families spaces designed specifically for their style of vacation.

Marine life & excursions

The Maldives is famous for its marine life, and Conrad offers an impressive selection of excursions. One of the major highlights of my trip was snorkeling in search of whale sharks. I went out twice because I was determined to see one. I wasn't successful the first time, but the second trip made it all worthwhile. Whale sharks can never be guaranteed since they're wild animals, but the search itself is exciting, and our guides were incredibly knowledgeable about marine conservation and local wildlife. We also went out snorkeling with manta rays and rounded out the trip with hand-line sunset fishing. We caught fish that were later prepared by the resort's chefs, making for a rewarding evening.

While the excursions are outstanding, I'd describe the snorkeling directly off the resort as good, but not exceptional. There's marine life to enjoy around the villas, but guests looking for the best snorkeling should take advantage of the guided excursions to nearby reefs. This is one reason the resort's location in South Ari Atoll, where whale sharks are present year-round, made it such a draw for me in the first place.

Need to know

  • The scenic seaplane transfer from Malé is part of the Conrad Maldives experience and was included in our package. It offers spectacular aerial views of the atolls, but it can be noisy, so consider bringing earplugs if you're sensitive to sound.

  • Conrad Maldives offers a variety of meal plans depending on the package you book, often including breakfast-only, half board, and full-board options, with some promotions adding enhanced dining benefits. Since dining at luxury Maldivian resorts can add up quickly, it's worth comparing meal plans before booking to find the best value for your travel style.

  • Plan to stay at least five nights to fully experience everything the resort has to offer. Between the restaurants, excursions, spa, and time to simply relax, shorter stays can feel rushed.

  • Reserve Ithaa Undersea Restaurant well before arrival. It's among the resort's most sought-after experiences.

  • Book popular excursions, like whale shark and manta ray snorkeling trips, before you arrive. These are in high demand and availability can be limited.

  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and water shoes if you plan to snorkel or spend time on the beaches.

  • Take advantage of the complimentary bicyclesthey're the easiest and most enjoyable way to explore the resort's two islands.
