Winter Magic at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Curator’s statement

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is one of those places that feels magical in every season. I’ve been lucky to visit in both summer and winter, and each has its own charm but winter truly transforms it into a wonderland. The trees dusted with snow, the mountains standing tall around the frozen lake, and the sound of sleigh bells as you ride to a frozen waterfall where ice climbers scale the glittering walls all make it unforgettable. Returning to the hotel for hot cocoa while watching skaters and hockey players glide across the ice is the perfect ending to a dreamy winter day.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is one of those rare places that truly captures the magic of winter. I’ve been fortunate to experience it in both summer and winter, but being there over New Year’s Eve was something I’ll never forget. The hotel hosted a huge celebration for kids of all ages. It had everything from inflatable slides to hamster balls, and my older teenagers had an absolute blast. As midnight approached, we all gathered outside, surrounded by the frozen lake and dazzling ice sculptures, counting down to the new year under a sky full of stars. It felt like a scene out of a storybook, and everyone agreed it was one of the most memorable New Year’s celebrations ever.

Every restaurant at the Fairmont has its own themed New Year’s Eve menu, and reservations are a must. We chose the Lakeview Lounge, which featured a Chinese New Year theme. It was a fun, festive meal with spectacular views of the snow-covered lake. We also had lunch there one afternoon, and it was just as special, watching the world outside sparkle in white. Later that evening, adults could enjoy a glamorous ball in the Victoria Room, the perfect ending to a day full of celebration and charm.

During our stay, we took full advantage of everything the property had to offer. A horse-drawn sleigh ride took us to the frozen waterfall, where we watched ice climbers scaling the ice and saw a newly married couple taking photos. It was picture-perfect. We also went cross-country skiing across the frozen lake to the same waterfall, and of course, couldn’t resist joining the fun on the ice skating rink. After long, adventure-filled days, we loved cozying up in the hotel, playing checkers by the fire with hot cocoa, and enjoying afternoon tea in the Fairview Restaurant, which was a real treat.

For dinner, we absolutely loved Walliser Stube, where we had the traditional raclette—melted Swiss cheese draped over warm potatoes, pickles, and sourdough bread. Followed by schnitzel and rich chocolate fondue. It was the perfect cozy alpine meal after a day outdoors. And for skiers, the area offers access to three incredible nearby mountains: Lake Louise Ski Resort, Sunshine Village, and Mount Norquay, each with breathtaking views and runs for all levels.

Our trip continued from there to Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, after first staying at Fairmont Banff Springs, but Lake Louise stood out as the heart of the journey. A place where nature, elegance, and pure winter joy come together in the most unforgettable way.

Need to know

If you’re heading to Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, plan ahead. The hotel and its restaurants book up quickly, especially during ski season and holidays. Make your room and spa reservations well in advance, and if you plan to dine on property, secure restaurant bookings early, as walk-ins are rare in peak months. If you’ll be skiing, consider arranging rentals or tuning up your gear before you arrive to save time once you’re there. Bring plenty of warm layers, since even short walks outside can be chilly, and pack some dressier outfits too. Evenings at the Fairmont often have an elegant, festive feel.
