Curator’s statement
This itinerary traces a seamless path from Tokyo to Kyoto via the Shinkansen, moving from the country’s most dynamic urban center through quieter countryside and into its cultural heart. What makes this route especially meaningful is the balance—it pairs the energy of each destination with design-forward stays that feel considered, grounding, and memorable in their own right. By following the train line, each leg is intentionally capped at around two and a half hours, allowing the journey itself to feel fluid rather than taxing. In a destination that can feel overwhelming to plan, this structure creates clarity—an effortless rhythm of movement, design, and place.

Where to stay in Japan

Japan has been a design obsession of mine for years, and this trip—four hotels across Central Japan with my husband—was built entirely around that lens. Each property speaks a completely different design language, but all four share the same defining quality: the architecture is the experience, not the backdrop. Routing the journey along the Shinkansen makes it feel effortless, moving from the intensity of Tokyo into the countryside and ending in the cultural depth of Kyoto—all without losing time to long travel days.

Hoshinoya Tokyo
Hoshinoya Tokyo is the ideal entry point. Set in Otemachi, it reimagines a traditional ryokan within a vertical, 17-story tower—yet the moment you remove your shoes and step inside, the city dissolves completely. The interiors are deeply calming and rooted in craft, and the rooftop onsen, fed by natural hot spring water from 1,500 meters below ground, becomes an immediate ritual. It’s a striking introduction to Japan’s ability to layer modernity with tradition in a way that feels both elevated and transportive.
Shishi-Iwa House
From there, just over an hour by train, Shishi-Iwa House offers a completely different expression of design. Located in the forested town of Karuizaw, the property is anchored by architecture from Shigeru Ban, with three distinct “houses” that each feel intimate and intentional (House No. 3 was a standout for me). It’s one of the most quietly extraordinary places I’ve ever stayed—minimal but warm, communal yet deeply private. I always recommend the architecture tour to fully understand the design ethos, and dinner at Shola, which mirrors the same level of precision and thoughtfulness.
Beniya Mukayu
Beniya Mukayu, accessed via Kaga-Onsen, is the most remote stop—and arguably the most essential. With just 16 rooms, each with its own private outdoor onsen, the experience becomes deeply personal and restorative. The property is rooted in stillness, with a spa that opens onto a bamboo forest and a pace that encourages you to slow down completely. Even one night here allows you to soak it all in, anchored by a traditional multi-course kaiseki dinner that reflects the season and region. It’s the kind of place where both the setting and the rituals offer a true expression of Japan’s traditions.
ROKU KYOTO, LXR
Ending at ROKU KYOTO, LXR brings the journey full circle. Tucked into the northern foothills of Kyoto, it offers a retreat-like atmosphere while still being within reach of the city’s temples and cultural landmarks. After days of movement, it’s the perfect place to recalibrate—whether that’s a quiet morning overlooking the mountains or an afternoon by the pool.
