Curator’s statement
The Peruvian Amazon stopped me in my tracks, and I’ve traveled enough to know that doesn’t happen often. This region is considered one of the last truly wild places on Earth, where the wildlife is extraordinary, the silence is profound, and the sense of being completely removed from the modern world is real. What makes it even better is that Aqua Expeditions removes every logistical barrier while keeping the experience utterly authentic. If this is on your list, stop waiting and send me a message!

The Peruvian Amazon is wilder, more intimate, and more humbling than most travelers expect. The stretch of river around Iquitos, where Aqua Expeditions operates, is among the most pristine and biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, largely untouched by development that has crept into other parts of the basin. From the moment you board, the outside world genuinely falls away. There is no road to Iquitos, and you can only arrive by air or river, and that geographic isolation is precisely what makes the experience so singular.
This does not feel like a cruise. This feels like staying at a luxury boutique hotel that happens to be floating down the Amazon.

Aqua Expeditions elevates the journey without insulating you from it. The ships max out at 40 guests and there is a 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio. It is an intimate and attentive atmosphere, without being overly fussy. The ship is beautifully designed with gorgeous cabins featuring beds that face floor-to-ceiling windows so you can take in the views, even when taking it easy.
The food is truly outstanding (locally sourced, and genuinely creative), and I definitely think of Aqua Expeditions as a great option for foodies. We had a “picnic” aboard the skiffs in a mangrove one afternoon and it was one of my favorite meals and memories of the trip!

One of the best things about my Aqua Expeditions experience was spending time with their expert naturalist guides (shoutout to the amazing Juan!). They can spot a pygmy marmoset in a canopy at dusk, lead skiff excursions deep into tributaries the main river would never reveal, and create encounters with wildlife that remind you just how extraordinary this ecosystem is, with pink river dolphins, sloths, caiman, hundreds of bird species. This is a birder’s paradise! This is not a destination where you hope to see something. You will see something every single day.

An Aqua Expeditions Amazon Cruise is also a great way to extend your time in Peru. You could pair the cruise with Cusco and the Sacred Valley to create a journey that covers two completely different parts of the country, marrying ancient civilization and untouched nature, which will leave you with a depth of experience that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere. You could also pair it with a trip to other parts of South America, and I met guests onboard that had just come from Patagonia.
This is an amazing experience for those that seek travel that feels meaningful rather than merely comfortable, and who are ready for an experience that genuinely changes their perspective. It is one of the most rewarding journeys anywhere in the world. I would place it alongside an African safari in terms of the lasting impression it leaves.

Need to know
Packing light and bringing the right items makes a real difference on this trip. Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral or dark colors is ideal for excursions, and I highly recommend full-length trousers and long-sleeve tops. When you sail on the Aqua Nera, your laundry service is included, so no need to overpack! Also, while you can dress up in the evenings if you like, it is perfectly okay to keep it casual.
A good insect repellent is non-negotiable. Having said that, I never had any issue with mosquitos or other insects when I was wearing repellent, which was a pleasant surprise!
The equatorial sun is intense even when it is overcast, so sun protection matters a lot here.
A great pair of binoculars will transform your wildlife experience on the water. While each skiff has a couple pairs onboard during the excursions, I really loved having my own pair with me.
Food onboard was truly one of the highlights of the trip, and we even had a ceviche cooking lesson with the chef one afternoon. But just in case you are traveling with anyone that has a special diet, allergies, or is maybe a little picky, just share this information in advance. They even offer a “comfort menu” if you are feeling like you want a burger or a pizza! Beer and house wine are included in your journey, but I recommend having one of the amazing passion fruit pisco sours at sunset!
Wifi connection while onboard was great, so I was able to stay in touch with my family back home. When you are out on the skiffs, don’t expect to necessarily have it, but think of it as an opportunity to “switch off” and be in the moment.
The best time to visit depends on your priorities. The high water season (roughly November to May) is when the forest floor floods, allowing the skiffs to go deep into the jungle canopy in a way that is genuinely magical. The low-water season (June to October) exposes beaches and makes it easier to spot wildlife, concentrated around the river’s edge (just like safari trips in Africa). Both seasons offer extraordinary experiences, and neither is wrong. I went during high water season in March and we saw tons of wildlife!
Flights into Iquitos connect through Lima, and it is worth building in at least one night in Lima on either end of the trip. The city has one of the best restaurant scenes in South America and makes for a fantastic gateway. And of course, I can help with the logistics!
This is a trip that rewards those who arrive with curiosity, and an open mind rather than a checklist. The Amazon reveals itself on its own terms, and when you embrace that, you come home with stories you will be telling for the rest of your life.
