A Disney Lover’s Guide to Tokyo and Beyond
Curator’s statement

If you're a Disney lover (like me), and you are planning your trip to Japan, you already know all about Tokyo Disney. You are more than ready for the immersive rides and excited to try out the special popcorn flavors and alien mochi, not to mention the park-themed vending machines. But what about the rest of your trip? You’ll probably have at least a week in Japan, and Tokyo Disney generally only takes up a couple of days. But the magic doesn't have to stop there. There are tons of options in Tokyo (and beyond) for getting your Disney fix.

Exclusively Disney

Let’s start with some places to get official merchandise in stores dedicated entirely to Disney. You might find yourself in a Disney store on your visit to Sky Tree or Shibuya, but the most notable is Disney flagship Tokyo. With three floors of fun, don’t miss the limited items unique to this store or the D-Made workshop, where you can design and make your own custom souvenirs.

Another option is the Disney Fantasy Shop by Belle Maison in Tokyo Station. Most travelers in Japan will visit Tokyo Station at least once to catch the Shinkansen. This is a convenient stop on your way in or out of Tokyo. Belle Maison, known in Japan as a mail-order service for various lifestyle goods, has collaborated with Disney to create a super cute line of clothes and home goods. I’m obsessed with the colorful train pass cases and fluffy hand towels that are both useful when navigating Japan.

Disney, among other things

It’s also worth checking out a secondhand store, like Surugaya, Mandarake or Hobby Off. These are the kinds of places you can really get lost in. While most of the items are pre-owned, they are typically in great condition. I have come across some neat finds — from collectible figurines to plushies to old Tokyo Disney limited-edition items. Some even have trading cards for games like Lorcana! These stores are not just in Tokyo, so you can visit one during almost any part of your trip.

If you find yourself in just about any mall in Japan, it is likely you will stumble across a store like Loft or Plaza. In my head, I call these "miscellaneous stores" because they have all that stuff that you probably don't need, but definitely will buy. In terms of Disney, I've seen stickers and stationary a-plenty, lotions and bath bombs galore. You want accessories? They have many. And you will still be left wanting more.

Honorable mentions

Japan is huge on exclusive and limited-time merch, and there are often brand collaborations for a variety of different items. Some recent examples include Ziploc, Godiva and Gelato Pique (which has the softest pajamas in the world). It might be beneficial to check out some of your favorite Japanese or international brands while on your trip.

ZACCANIA is a personal favorite character store of mine. It has three locations between Saitama and Chiba, the closest being about a thirty-minute train ride from Asakusa. They have a huge variety of character goods, especially Disney. One of their locations was dangerously close to where I used to live, and to this day I am still obsessed with the bento boxes, wallets and glassware I bought there.

Whether you're hunting for rare merchandise, magical everyday items or cultural gems, there will be plenty of opportunities no matter where you go. So pack your bags, bring your sense of wonder and get ready to explore the enchanting world of Disney in Japan.
