The hotel
The Sonnenalp Vail is a family-run hotel, and the personalized touches are noticeable in the care and attention given to both the property and its guests. One of the main luxury resorts in Vail, the Sonnenalp still maintains the feel of a boutique hotel. Guests are greeted with a warm fire, mountainside decor and top-quality service.

Onsite amenities are plentiful. There is an indoor/outdoor pool, along with a full-service spa featuring treatments and an oxygen bar to reset from the mountain altitude. Dining options range from the tavern-style Bully Ranch to the al fresco Treff’s Cafe or to the Bavarian-style Stüberl at Ludwig’s. In the evening, guests can enjoy light music and cocktails at King’s Club.

All rooms feature mountainside decor, and many include a fireplace. Rooms and suites range in size and bed setup, accommodating families or groups of different sizes. My junior suite was spacious and featured a king bed, fireplace and view of the pool and mountainside — the perfect retreat after a day of skiing.
