Curator’s statement
The Argolida region of the Peloponnese is where Greece’s true culture comes alive, with historic sites, charming towns, and sparkling coastlines all within easy reach. Whether you choose Nafplio with its Venetian fortresses and lively squares or Tolo, a seaside village with sandy beaches and island cruises, this area makes the perfect base for exploring. From here, day trips take you to the ancient wonders of Epidaurus, Mycenae, and the vineyards of Nemea. My family and I stayed in the area for six weeks and fell in love with the warmth of the people, the food, and the relaxed rhythm of daily life.

Things to do in Argolida

Hiking around Palamidi
Nafplio
Fortress of Palamidi
Perched high above Nafplio, Palamidi is an 18th-century Venetian stronghold famous for its panoramic views. Climb the legendary 999 steps from town (or drive if you prefer!) and be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the sea and mountains. We preferred morning climbs as the summer approached and temperatures went up and, occasionally, you come across cruise passengers.Bourtzi Castle
Originally built by the Venetians, it once protected the town from pirates and invaders. Today, it’s a picture-perfect backdrop for sunsets and evening strolls along the waterfront.Syntagma Square
Lined with cafés, shops, and historical buildings, it’s perfect for people-watching and enjoying a light lunch after climbing the fortress stairs. The Archaeological Museum
This is a great museum in the Syntagma Square area, housed in a Venetian building, with treasures from Mycenae and Tiryns.Old Town
Wander the labyrinth of narrow lanes, filled with boutique shops, ice cream stands, and hidden churches. Look up: Bougainvillea and painted shutters turn every street into a postcard.Folklore Museum
A quieter but fascinating stop, featuring handmade textiles, traditional costumes, and everyday objects from rural Greek life. Great for families or anyone interested in culture beyond ruins.
Tolo
Once a quiet fishing village, Tolo has grown into a lively but still authentic seaside town. Just 10 minutes from Nafplio, it’s the perfect base for families, couples, or anyone who wants to mix sandy beaches (there are several beaches in Tolo) with cultural day trips. With its long stretch of shallow turquoise water, friendly locals, and island views, Tolo is all about slowing down and soaking up the Greek summer.
Day cruise to Hydra
Hydra: Famous for its stone mansions, donkeys (no cars allowed), and artsy vibe.
Spetses: Known for its naval history, pine forests, and chic cafés.
Ancient Theater of Epidaurus
Few places in the world let you step so directly into the pages of myth and history. Argolida is home to some of Greece’s most iconic archaeological treasures—ruins that still whisper of kings, healers, and heroes. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just curious about ancient stories, these sites are unforgettable. The Theater of Epidaurus is one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in the world. Built in the fourth century BC, it is renowned for its perfect acoustics. The theater is still in use today, hosting summer performances during the Athens & Epidaurus Festival. Nearby lies the Sanctuary of Asklepios, a healing center dedicated to the god of medicine. Pilgrims once came here seeking cures for their ailments.
Mycenae
Once the seat of King Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks in the Trojan War, Mycenae was the most powerful kingdom of the Late Bronze Age. Walk through the Lion Gate, the massive stone entrance carved nearly 3,500 years ago. Visit the Treasury of Atreus (or “Tomb of Agamemnon”), a monumental beehive-shaped tomb. The on-site museum holds gold masks, pottery, and artifacts that bring the world of Homer’s Iliad to life.
Places to eat & drink in Argolida

Maria's Restaurant
Our extended stay in the area allowed us to enjoy so many wonderful tavernas, cafés, and local restaurants. We also had a full kitchen in our bungalow, so we were able to prepare meals. Mediterranean food is so fresh and simple. Grilled meats and fish, freshly pressed local olive oil, citrus—we were the healthiest we’ve ever been after this trip.
Maria’s Restaurant, Tolo
Perfectly situated along the main road of Tolo, offering indoor and outdoor seating with waterfront views. Lovely family-owned restaurant with delicious food! We ate here on several occasions.Panorama, Tolo
Next door to Maria’s, this is another place we frequented during our stay in Tolo.Vizantio, Nafplio
We stumbled upon this quaint restaurant while wandering the town center alleys and had a wonderful meal at this place.Plakostroto, Hydra
Just back off the busy waterfront marina, this restaurant is a great option for lunch when you get off the boat.
