Things to do in Maui & O’ahu

View of Waikiki from atop Diamond Head Crater

O’ahu

  • Snorkeling in world-famous Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve: Known as one of the top snorkeling spots in Oahu, full of diverse marine life and a coral reef (and maybe even a few "honu" or turtles!). Entry is only allowed via the nature preserve’s reservation, so be sure to book a time early as spots fill up fast!

  • Kualoa Ranch: This privately owned nature preserve may look familiar as it is the film site for many famous movies such as Jurassic Park and Godzilla. Here, you can take in the breathtaking views and landscapes via tram tours, ATVs, horseback riding, or bikes!

  • Pearl Harbor National Memorial & USS Arizona Memorial: For the history buffs, a visit to the museum and memorial at Pearl Harbor is a must.

  • Hike up Diamond Head Crater: O’ahu’s most iconic symbol is the Diamond Head Crater, where you can make the trek up to the top for spectacular views of Waikiki and beyond. Get there early to avoid the crowds!

  • Lanikai Beach: Arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in Oahu, with crystal clear turquoise waters and powder-soft white sand.

Maui

  • Road to Hana: Travel the scenic road to Hana from Paia, Maui to get views of lush forests, waterfalls, and black sand beaches. It is recommended to get a local tour guide for the drive as it requires expert navigation along the many twists and turns. Be sure to stop and get some freshly baked banana bread along the way!

  • Take a helicopter ride over Maui and Molokai. There’s no better way to truly see the beauty of Maui than from above, and with Molokai nearby, you can get spectacular views of parts of the island that you can't get to on foot!

  • Catch the sunrise or star-gaze at night atop Haupa'Akea Peak in Haleakala National Park. Drive to the top of Haupa'Akea Peak to catch a beautiful sunrise, or make the drive after sunset for the best stargazing on the island. Be sure to bring a jacket!

  • Cliff-dive at Black Rock Beach: If you're feeling adventurous, head to Black Rock Beach in Lahaina for some cliff diving, or just relax and enjoy the beautiful beach!

Places to eat & drink in Maui & O’ahu

Honu Oceanside, Maui

O’ahu

  • Monkeypod Kitchen, Waikiki: Great oceanfront views with a diverse menu and a famous Mai Tai!

  • Roy's Waikiki: Upscale waterfront restaurant featuring chef Roy Yamaguchi's Hawaiian fusion cuisine.

  • Hale'iwa Beach House (North Shore): A casual spot featuring fresh seafood and Hawaiian favorites on the North Shore.

Maui

  • Mama's Fish House: The most well-known restaurant in Maui, with renowned seafood, local favorites, and ocean views. Be sure to book in advance!

  • Honu Oceanside: Chic waterfront restaurant in Lahaina with seafood and steaks.

  • Sea House Restaurant: Relaxed, family-friendly open-air eatery in Kapalua with oceanfront views.

Need to know

Traveling between islands is a quick flight (less than an hour). O’ahu and Maui offer two different experiences, and both are worth visiting! Maui is more relaxed and rugged, while O’ahu is bustling and beautiful. There is plenty to do on each island, but visiting both will show you more of what Hawai’i has to offer!
