Curator’s statement
Being born and raised in Bradenton, I’ve always known it as a place that moves at its own pace. Riverfront mornings, familiar local cafés, and sunsets along the Manatee River that never feel rushed. What makes Bradenton so special is its balance: a welcoming local community, vibrant arts scene, and easy access to the Gulf Coast’s most beautiful beaches just minutes away. While nearby islands often steal the spotlight, Bradenton offers travelers something even better—a relaxed waterfront city with authentic character and effortless access to Anna Maria Island. It’s the kind of place where visitors arrive for the beaches but quickly discover there’s much more to explore.

Things to do in Bradenton

Bradenton Riverwalk at sunset: a perfect start (or end) to any Gulf Coast getaway, just minutes from Anna Maria Island!
Stroll the Bradenton Riverwalk and seasonal markets
Stretching along the Manatee River in the heart of downtown, the Bradenton Riverwalk is one of the most scenic and well-designed waterfront spaces on Florida’s Gulf Coast, and easily one of my favorite places to spend time locally. The promenade is lined with public art, shaded walking and biking paths, playgrounds, fishing piers, and open green spaces that make it just as appealing for a quiet morning walk as it is for an afternoon outing.
On weekends, the Riverwalk comes to life with seasonal markets, live music, and local events, and I always recommend planning your visit around sunset, when the entire waterfront takes on a soft, golden glow.
Explore the Village of the Arts
Just minutes from downtown, the Village of the Arts is one of Bradenton’s most distinctive and creative neighborhoods, and a place I always recommend for something a little different. This vibrant district is made up of brightly painted historic cottages that house working artists’ studios, galleries, cafés, and intimate restaurants. If you can, plan your visit during one of the Village’s art walk weekends when the entire neighborhood comes alive with music, open studios, and a lively, community-driven atmosphere.
Visit Robinson Preserve
Robinson Preserve is one of the most beautiful and immersive outdoor spaces along Florida’s Gulf Coast, offering a quieter and more natural side of Bradenton. The preserve features miles of scenic walking and biking trails through mangroves and marshlands, along with opportunities for kayaking and wildlife spotting. For the best experience, visit in the early morning or just before sunset and make time to climb the observation tower for sweeping views across Tampa Bay.
Take the Anna Maria Island Ferry
One of Bradenton’s best-kept secrets is the Anna Maria Island Ferry, which departs from the downtown Riverwalk and offers a scenic, stress-free ride across the bay. It allows visitors to reach the island without dealing with traffic or parking, making it one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to access the beaches. The ride itself is part of the experience, with beautiful coastal views and frequent dolphin sightings along the way.
Spend the day at Anna Maria Island
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Bradenton is how easily you can access Anna Maria Island, known for its powdery white sand and turquoise Gulf waters. The island offers a laid-back coastal atmosphere with boutique shops, local restaurants, and beautiful beaches that feel classic and unspoiled. Whether arriving by ferry or by car, it’s an easy and memorable day trip that perfectly complements a stay in Bradenton.
Discover the historic Cortez fishing village
Just a short drive from Bradenton, Cortez is one of Florida’s last remaining historic fishing villages and offers a glimpse into Old Florida. The waterfront community is home to working fishing docks, locally owned seafood markets, and casual restaurants serving fresh Gulf catch. It’s the perfect place for a relaxed afternoon exploring coastal heritage and experiencing a more authentic side of the region.
Day trip to Myakka River State Park or nearby cities
For those looking to explore beyond the coastline, a day trip to Myakka River State Park offers a completely different side of Florida with expansive wetlands, abundant wildlife, and scenic trails. Visitors can hike, bike, kayak or take an airboat tour, with frequent sightings of alligators and native birds throughout the park. Bradenton’s central location also makes it easy to visit nearby cities like Sarasota and St. Petersburg, adding culture, dining, and waterfront experiences to your itinerary without needing to relocate
Places to eat & drink in Bradenton

This is the kind of flavor you only get on the coast.
Sage Biscuit Café
A true Bradenton staple, Sage Biscuit Café is one of those places locals have been coming back to for years. With a location right in the heart of downtown, it’s known for relaxed breakfast and lunch—hearty classics, strong coffee, and a casual neighborhood atmosphere that feels familiar the moment you walk in. It perfectly captures the everyday rhythm of a Bradenton morning.
Tide Tables (nearby favorite)
Technically just outside Bradenton, but very much part of the local routine, especially on the way to Anna Maria Island. Tide Tables is a laid-back, waterfront seafood spot where you can enjoy fresh Gulf catch just steps from the docks. It’s casual, unpretentious, and exactly the kind of Old Florida experience visitors are often looking for.
O’bricks Irish Pub & Martini Bar
Located in the heart of downtown, O’bricks blends a classic pub atmosphere with a more polished dining experience. It’s a go-to for evening drinks, live music, and a lively but comfortable energy that reflects Bradenton’s growing downtown scene. Whether stopping in for cocktails or dinner, it’s a place that consistently draws both locals and visitors.
Jennings Downtown Provisions
Tucked inside the historic Jennings Arcade on Old Main Street, Jennings Downtown Provisions feels like one of those true local finds. It leans toward small plates, wine, and relaxed evenings—think flatbreads, tacos, and shareable bites paired with craft beer or a glass of wine. The space itself carries a cozy, historic charm while still feeling fresh and modern.
Oyster River
Located at the Palmetto Marriott just across the river, Oyster River offers a more elevated waterfront dining experience with sweeping views of the Manatee River. It’s an ideal spot for sunset cocktails or a relaxed dinner, blending coastal cuisine with a polished atmosphere—perfect for travelers looking to balance casual days with a slightly more refined evening.
Need to know
Best time to visit: Bradenton is a year-round destination, but the most popular time to visit is between November and April when temperatures are warm, sunny, and humidity is lower. Spring and early summer bring beautiful beach weather, while late summer and early fall tend to be quieter with fewer crowds and better rates, though afternoon showers are more common.
Getting around: While having a car is helpful for exploring the area, Bradenton offers a unique advantage with the Anna Maria Island Ferry, which allows visitors to access Anna Maria Island without dealing with traffic or parking. Downtown Bradenton is also very walkable, especially around the Riverwalk and Old Main Street.
Family-friendly appeal: Bradenton is especially well-suited for families, with outdoor spaces like the Riverwalk, nearby preserves, and easy beach access. The laid-back pace and variety of activities make it easy to balance relaxation with exploration.
Local atmosphere: Unlike some of Florida’s more developed beach destinations, Bradenton still feels local and authentic. Visitors can expect a slower pace, friendly community, and a mix of nature, arts, and waterfront living.
