Day 1: Exploring the heart of Santa Fe

Arrive via Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF), which is the closest option, just 15 minutes from downtown. Alternatively, Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is about an hour’s drive away.
Morning
Upon arrival, check in at La Posada de Santa Fe, a charming hotel that perfectly marries comfort with New Mexican culture. The check-in process is smooth. Enjoy the warm atmosphere, which instantly feels like home. The hotel’s Julia Restaurant and Bar features a refined and adventurous menu inspired by a woman who traveled the Santa Fe Trail and began a family in the rugged American Southwest. Highlights from the first meal include the green chile chicken corn chowder and the divine green chile pork belly mac and cheese.
Afternoon
The adventure begins at the Santa Fe Plaza, an iconic hub where you stroll, exploring local shops and galleries. A visit to the New Mexico Museum of Art is a must—open from 10 am to 5 pm (and until 7 pm on Fridays), I recommend allowing at least two hours to fully appreciate the contemporary and historical masterpieces.
Evening
Dinner at The Shed is a highlight of the day. Known for its delicious New Mexican cuisine, the vibrant atmosphere is perfect for family gatherings or intimate dinners. Established in 1953, the menu features gluten-free and vegetarian options. My favorites include the tamale appetizer, traditional salsa, and the mouthwatering Frito pie.
Night
After dinner, we caught a performance at the Santa Fe Opera: The Righteous by Gregory Spears and a revival of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. I recommend checking the calendar for events during your visit.
Day 2: Art and culture

Morning
Every day begins at La Posada with a refreshing morning workout and a delightful breakfast included with your stay, energizing you for a day of exploration. Head to Canyon Road, a picturesque street lined with art galleries. Enjoy the fresh air as you wander through a feast for the senses, taking in everything from traditional to contemporary art.
Lunch
Santa Fe boasts over 250 unique galleries, and it’s a joy to spend the day checking out the beautiful artwork. Stop at Café Pasqual's, where you indulge in locally sourced dishes bursting with vibrant colors and flavors. I highly recommend the Valencia orange and avocado salad, perfect for a midday pick-me-up.
Afternoon
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum beckons, where you immerse myself in the works of one of America’s most revered artists. Guided tours bring her art to life, making the experience engaging and enriching. The museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, and I recommend reserving at least one hour for the visit.
Evening
One of my favorite dining experiences is at Geronimo on Canyon Road. The ambiance is warm and inviting, housed in the elegant “Borrego House,” built in 1756. Thick adobe walls, kiva fireplaces, and wood beams surround the space as you savor the oven-roasted red beet salad and the pan-seared Alaskan halibut, both delicious. They also offer a vegetarian tasting menu with a four-course prix-fixe that is exquisite.
Day 3: Outdoor adventures

Morning
Start your day with a biking adventure along the Santa Fe River Trail. The scenic trails are ideal for couples and families alike, allowing you to soak in the beautiful landscape together. Access the trail from De Vargas Park or Bicentennial/Alto Park.
For outdoor adventures, I also recommend Picacho Peak Trail, a 3.9-mile hike offering plenty of photo opportunities. Pro tip: Parking at the intersection of Cerro Gordo and Upper Canyon Road fills up quickly, so arrive early.
Another favorite is Bandelier National Monument, featuring ancient cliffside dwellings and caves. Don’t miss the Tsankawi Trail, a narrow mesa of solidified volcanic ash. The Atalaya Mountain Trail, which is approximately 5.8 miles, begins at St. John’s College and leads through ponderosa pines until reaching the summit. You can shorten the trek by starting from the Ponderosa Ridge trailhead.
Lunch or happy hour
At The Cowgirl BBQ, enjoy a lively atmosphere with outdoor seating. It’s a fun spot to relax and refuel. Having been in Santa Fe for over 20 years, I can vouch for their fresh margaritas—try the Cowgirl Agave! Their Crimini Mushroom Fajitas are also a must-have, with plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Afternoon
Visit the Palace of the Governors, which brings history alive as the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States, built in 1610. Local artisans often sell their handmade crafts outside, perfect for picking up unique souvenirs.
Evening
Dinner at La Plazuela, located in La Fonda, offers a romantic ambiance with a beautiful courtyard setting. The space, built in 1920, takes an innovative approach to Santa Fe dining and New Mexican cuisine, cooking up traditional recipes with enticing new twists. I highly recommend the coctel de camaron for an appetizer, followed by the slow-roasted prime rib for the main course, which is exquisitely prepared.
Day 4: Relaxation and farewell

Morning
While I had an amazing spa experience at La Posada on a previous trip, this time I indulged in a spa day at Ten Thousand Waves, a serene Japanese-style spa. Couples’ treatments here are a true treat, complete with a cold plunge, sauna, and soaking pool with plenty of space to relax.
After the spa and some much-needed relaxation, I enjoyed a small lunch at The Pantry, a Santa Fe staple since 1948. They offer New Mexican food done right, with friendly service and a menu full of delicious sandwiches and salads.
Afternoon
Visit the Museum of International Folk Art showcasing folk art from around the world, providing a delightful experience for all ages. I recommend spending 1–2 hours here, as it’s open from 10 am to 5 pm daily with free admission.
If time allows, drive 70 miles from Santa Fe to Taos, taking the High Road to Taos, which is rich with natural and cultural treasures, including the Jemez Mountains and the sacred community of the Santuario de Chimayó. Be sure to check out the El Posito, and your route ends at the Saint Francis Plaza of Ranchos de Taos, made famous by the paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe.
For your farewell dinner, enjoy The Compound, an upscale restaurant that has promised a fine dining experience since 1966. The menu is stunning and changes seasonally. My first course featured Maine lobster and bay scallops, while the roasted wild Alaskan halibut stole the show for my main course.
