Curator’s statement
Vancouver is a city of breathtaking beauty, from its stunning natural landscapes to its warm and welcoming residents. From the moment I landed, I was met with friendly smiles and helpful locals who made navigating the airport effortless. Thanks to their guidance, I smoothly passed through immigration, boarded the SkyTrain, and arrived at my waterfront hotel with ease. At the Fairmont Waterfront, the staff enthusiastically highlighted activities right outside the hotel doors. Energized by their suggestions, I set out to explore the vibrant city around me.

Things to do in Vancouver

Biking around Stanley Park
Things to do in Vancouver
Bike around Stanley Park: Enjoy scenic views of the bay while cycling the park’s dedicated bike path. Bicycles are available from local shops, Mobi Rogers kiosks, and even for free at some hotels like the Fairmont Waterfront. The route is one-way (counterclockwise), so start from the correct side.
Ride the False Creek Ferry: Hop on the small ferry to enjoy views of the shoreline and local harbor. It’s a fun and efficient way to see the city from the water.
Visit Granville Island: Accessible by ferry or land, this spot offers local artisan shops and a bustling public market. It’s perfect for breakfast or lunch on the outdoor terrace.
Take an urban walk: Explore Vancouver’s neighborhoods on foot using downloadable self-guided routes. It’s a great way to discover the city’s unique character.
Things to do in Richmond
Richmond is home to Vancouver International Airport but is also a vibrant destination worth exploring, especially if you have a layover.
Seafood at Steveston Harbor: This charming, mostly local town offers fresh seafood and waterfront views. You can get there by taxi or, like I did, by borrowing a bicycle from the Fairmont Airport Hotel.
McArthurGlen Outlet Mall: Just minutes from the airport, this outdoor shopping center features a village atmosphere and designer brands.
Try Chinese cuisine: Richmond is renowned for its exceptional Chinese food—on par with what you’d find in Hong Kong.
Ice skate at the Richmond Olympic Oval: If it’s too cold to be outdoors, enjoy skating in the same venue used during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Experience the Richmond Night Market: Open on summer weekends, the night market is full of local flavor, with food vendors, games, and entertainment.
Relax at the Fairmont Airport Hotel: If you have a long layover, escape to the Fairmont’s airport lounge or restaurant, located outside of security near the United check-in counter. It’s a quiet, elegant place to unwind.
Places to eat & drink in Vancouver

Battle of the boulangeries: Stuart and Terra Breads
Granville Public Market is THE place to try local specialties. My favorite bakery is Terra Bread.
ARC Restaurant (Fairmont Waterfront): Located in the Fairmont Waterfront, ARC features locally sourced, artisan dishes served in a bright, open setting. A great spot for a delicious and relaxed meal.
Lobby Lounge & RawBar (Fairmont Pacific Rim): This stylish venue is the place to see and be seen. With a chic, artistic atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails, it’s perfect for a night out or a leisurely drink.
Botanist Bar (Fairmont Pacific Rim): Ranked among North America’s 50 Best Bars, Botanist Bar is known for its whimsical, imaginative cocktails and elegant ambiance.
Globe@YVR (Fairmont Vancouver Airport): This restaurant is a serene escape from the airport hustle and bustle. Open to all travelers, it’s worth arriving early to enjoy the calm atmosphere and excellent food. There’s a check-in kiosk in the lobby that prints luggage tags and boarding passes. Pro tip: Print out your luggage tag, take your luggage to the drop-off counter, and return for a final drink before heading through security. Located near the United and Air Canada check-in counters.
Sea Harbour Seafood Restaurant (Richmond): Highly recommended for its outstanding dim sum—often regarded as some of the best outside of Hong Kong. A must-visit for lovers of traditional Chinese cuisine.

Vancouver travel tips
Airport to waterfront: Getting from Vancouver International Airport to the downtown waterfront is easy. Just hop on the SkyTrain’s Canada Line and ride to Waterfront Station. Pro tip: tap your credit card at the gate to enter and exit—no need to buy a separate ticket from the machines.
Biking around the city: Vancouver is a bike-friendly city with dedicated bike lanes throughout. Use the Mobi by Rogers e-bike sharing service, which has convenient stations and includes helmets. Both the Fairmont Waterfront and Fairmont Airport hotels also offer complimentary bikes for guests.
Fairmont Airport day use: If you have a long layover or hours between your cruise / ski trip and flight, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport offers day-use access to its gym and hotel rooms. It’s a comfortable and convenient way to recharge before your next adventure.
