Curator’s statement

Prague has always felt like a city built for stories—full of hidden courtyards, centuries-old libraries, and legends woven into its cobblestone streets. After reading “The Secret of Secrets” by Dan Brown, I became even more fascinated by how the city’s history, architecture, and symbolism create the perfect setting for mystery and discovery. This itinerary invites travelers to experience Prague the way a thriller unfolds: following clues through castles, bridges, and secret corners of the city. It’s a destination where every street feels like it might reveal another story.

Day 1: Arrival & first steps through Prague

Arrive in Prague and check into your hotel, giving yourself time to settle in and soak up the city’s atmosphere. Begin exploring the winding streets of Old Town and make your way to Old Town Square, where colorful baroque buildings surround the iconic Prague Astronomical Clock. Walking through this historic heart of the city immediately introduces you to the mystical and layered history that inspired “The Secret of Secrets” by Dan Brown. End the day with a sunset stroll across Charles Bridge to take in views of the castle and river, setting the tone for your journey.

I recommend dining at Café Savoy, a historic café known for its elegant interiors and excellent Czech and European dishes. It’s a perfect place to unwind after travel while soaking in Prague’s café culture. Try the homemade pastries or traditional schnitzel for a classic introduction to Czech flavors.

Insider tip: Visit the square in the evening, when crowds are smaller and the lights create a magical atmosphere.

Day 2: Mysteries of the Jewish Quarter

Spend the day exploring the historic Jewish Quarter, a district rich in symbolism and centuries of history that echoes the mystery in “The Secret of Secrets”. Begin at the Old Jewish Cemetery, where the densely packed gravestones create a haunting and atmospheric setting. Continue to the Old-New Synagogue, one of Europe’s oldest active synagogues, and learn about the legendary Golem of Prague. Wander the surrounding streets of Josefov, stopping at the Spanish Synagogue to admire its intricate Moorish-inspired design.

Stop for lunch at Lokál Dlouhááá. This popular spot serves traditional Czech comfort food and fresh draft beer in a lively, authentic setting. It’s an excellent choice for travelers wanting to experience local cuisine in a casual atmosphere. The roasted pork with dumplings and sauerkraut is a local favorite.

Insider tip: Purchase a combined Jewish Quarter ticket ahead of time to easily access multiple sites and visit early in the morning for a quieter experience.

Stroll through the castle’s courtyards and gardens, taking time to notice the intricate details and hidden corners that inspire curiosity. Spend the afternoon wandering the surrounding castle district streets, enjoying views of the Vltava River below.

After a day exploring Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral, enjoy dinner with river views at Kampa Park. This upscale restaurant offers contemporary European cuisine and stunning views of Charles Bridge, making it a memorable dining experience. Reservations are recommended, especially for outdoor seating during peak seasons.

Insider tip: Arrive early to avoid crowds and capture panoramic photos from the castle terraces.

Today focuses on Prague’s intellectual and cultural treasures, starting with the Klementinum Baroque Library. This historic library, with its ornate frescoed ceilings and celestial globes, immerses visitors in a world of learning and hidden knowledge reminiscent of the novel’s secretive undertones. Spend time exploring the library and nearby Baroque halls, absorbing the beauty and history that make this a standout site. Finish the day wandering the surrounding streets, stopping at small cafés or bookshops tucked into Old Town alleys.

After visiting the historic Klementinum Baroque Library, enjoy a casual meal at Eska. This modern restaurant blends traditional Czech ingredients with contemporary techniques, offering a creative take on local flavor. The sourdough bread and seasonal dishes are highlights of the menu.

Insider tip: Guided tours are required to enter the library, so book in advance to guarantee access.

Day 5: Hidden corners & Malá Strana discovery

Explore the quieter side of Prague in the Malá Strana district, known for its hidden courtyards, narrow streets, and charming architecture. Visit small gardens, local artisan shops, and tucked-away cafés that capture the city’s intimate charm. This day is about uncovering places travelers often miss, echoing the experience of following clues in a literary mystery. Stroll along the riverside or through the cobblestone streets, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere away from the main tourist paths.

Stop for lunch at U Medvídků, one of Prague’s oldest breweries and restaurants. It’s a great place to try Czech beer and hearty traditional dishes in a historic setting. Sample the dark lager, which is brewed on-site and highly regarded by locals.

Insider tip: Leave some time for wandering without a strict plansome of Prague’s most magical spots are found by accident.

It’s the perfect spot for a final meal before heading home. Try the goulash with bread dumplings for a traditional Czech favorite.

Need to know

Prague is a very walkable city, especially in Old Town and Malá Strana, but cobblestone streets can be uneven, so comfortable shoes are essential. Public transportation is excellent and affordabletrams and the metro make it easy to reach areas outside the historic center. Many museums and attractions require advance booking, particularly guided experiences like the Klementinum Baroque Library, so planning ahead will save time. Currency in the Czech Republic is the Czech koruna (CZK), and while many places accept cards, it’s useful to carry small amounts of cash for markets and smaller vendors.

If you plan to visit popular sites such as Charles Bridge early in the morning or later in the evening, you’ll experience fewer crowds and better photo opportunities. Dining in Old Town can be more expensive, so consider venturing slightly outside the main tourist areas for authentic restaurants at better prices. Tipping in restaurants is customary but modestrounding up the bill or leaving 10% is generally sufficient. Prague is also a city of hidden courtyards and side streets, so take time to wander and discover places that aren’t in guidebooks.

Best time to visit: Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Language: Czech is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Safety: Prague is generally safe for travelers, though standard precautions apply in busy tourist zones.
