Curator’s statement

Virgin Gorda is where you go when you want the Caribbean’s beauty without the crowds. Known for its dramatic granite boulders, hidden beaches, and crystal-clear waters, this island invites you to slow down and soak up its natural wonders. It’s also where I first discovered my love of scuba diving—exploring its vibrant reefs and historic wrecks was an unforgettable experience that opened up a whole new world beneath the surface. Virgin Gorda is the perfect escape for travelers seeking laid-back luxury and authentic charm.

Things to do on Virgin Gorda

Saba Rock

  • The Baths National Park: Explore the world-famous boulders, hidden pools, and sandy beaches that make the Baths such an iconic spot. Go early or late in the day to enjoy the magic with fewer crowds (although the island never gets too busy). And don’t forget water shoes for clambering over the rocks and streams!

  • Get dive-certified or explore the RMS Rhone Wreck: Virgin Gorda is a wonderful place to earn your PADI Open Water certification (like me!), with calm waters, vibrant reefs, and skilled local instructors who make the process enjoyable and safe. If you’re already certified, don’t miss a dive at the famous RMS Rhone wreck. This 1867 British mail ship lies just offshore and is one of the Caribbean’s most legendary dive sites, with dramatic swim-throughs and abundant marine life. Dive BVI is a trusted operator offering both courses and trips—they’re fantastic at tailoring the experience for all levels.

  • Spring Bay: This lesser-known area is close to the Baths, but a little bit of a secret. Its calm, shallow waters make it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Bring a picnic and make a day out of this serene location.

  • Snorkeling at Savannah Bay: Discover this long stretch of white sand and clear, shallow water that’s perfect for a peaceful snorkel. It’s relatively remote, so bring your own gear or rent in town before you get there.

  • Oil Nut Bay Beach Club: If you’re a fan of barefoot luxury, this is your spot. Spend a day at this exclusive resort’s beach club. Rent a cabana, sip craft cocktails, and enjoy the serenity of one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. If you aren’t already staying at the resort, day passes can be purchased for the club.

  • Hike Gorda Peak: A short hike takes you to Virgin Gorda’s highest point, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the island and surrounding sea. It’s an easy, family-friendly walk that’s especially lovely at sunrise or sunset.

  • Visit Copper Mine National Park: Wander the atmospheric ruins of this 19th-century copper mine perched above the ocean. I recommend going in the late afternoon to have the place to yourself and capture some stunning photos.

  • Paddleboard or kayak in North Sound: The calm, protected waters of North Sound are ideal for paddleboarding or kayaking, even if you’re a beginner. It’s a peaceful way to explore the mangroves and enjoy the scenery. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot sea turtles here!

  • Island-hop to Saba Rock or Bitter End Yacht Club: Hop on a water taxi or boat to visit these iconic North Sound outposts. Both offer great spots for a casual meal, a drink, and some of the best people-watching on the water.

  • Charter a day sail: Sailing around Virgin Gorda and its neighboring islets offers a magical way to explore hidden beaches and snorkeling spots. Many charters will pick you up right at your resort, so ask your travel advisor to help arrange a private or small-group sail.

Places to eat & drink on Virgin Gorda

Nova at Oil Nut Bay

  • CocoMaya: This chic beachfront spot combines Asian and Latin flavors with a side of spectacular sunsets. Grab a seat on one of their oversized daybeds and order the crispy rice tuna (it’s as good as the view).

  • The Restaurant at Leverick Bay: One of the most beloved restaurants on the island, this relaxed spot is known for fresh seafood, pastas, and Caribbean classics. Check out their Friday night BBQs that have live music and fire dancing. Bringing the whole family? They do an amazing pirate show that caters to all ages.

  • Hog Haven: Perched high above North Sound, Hog Heaven serves up smoky BBQ and ice-cold rum cocktails with the best view on the island. Sunsets are stunning here, so call ahead for a table with the best spot.

  • Sugarcane Restaurant at Nail Bay: They offer farm-to-table Caribbean cuisine with a stylish but unfussy vibe. During the day, you can take a dip in their beautiful pool and try a light lunch. At night, the cocktails are as thoughtful as the dishes, and it’s one of the island’s best spots for a leisurely walk on the beach.

  • The Top of the Baths: Just above the Baths National Park, this breezy café is a great place to cool off with casual fare like burgers, salads, and smoothies. Treat yourself to their signature cocktail, the Painkiller.

  • Chez Bamboo: A lively spot for tapas, sushi, and Caribbean bites, with occasional live music and dancing. The garden setting feels intimate and fun, perfect for a festive evening out.

  • Mermaid’s Dockside Bar & Grill: Right on the water in Spanish Town, this easygoing joint serves up hearty portions of grilled fish, ribs, and cold beer. This is some of the best fresh fish I have ever had—best enjoyed at a picnic table right by the dock.

  • Nova at Oil Nut Bay: Overwater dining with a sleek, modern design and inventive cocktails makes Nova one of the island’s most stylish restaurants. This one is perfect for a special occasion or just a night spent admiring the view.

  • Island Pot: A true hidden gem, they serve home-cooked Caribbean comfort food with friendly service and big flavors. If you’re looking for the local culture, this place is it!

  • Saba Rock Restaurant: A short boat hop from Virgin Gorda, this legendary little island serves up fresh catch and tropical cocktails in a breezy setting. The vibe is casual and fun, great for lunch or drinks as part of an island-hopping day.

Need to know

  • Travel during shoulder season: Late April through June and November are my favorite times—warm weather, fewer crowds, and often better rates.

  • Dive BVI is my go-to for diving and snorkel trips: They’re friendly, professional, and great with both beginners and experienced divers. I felt so supported getting certified here, and I can’t recommend their wreck dive trips enough.

  • Rent a car or golf cart, but only when needed: If you’re staying in North Sound or at a resort like Oil Nut Bay, you might not need one. But if you want to explore The Baths, Spring Bay, or Copper Mine, a day or two with transportation gives you freedom to roam.

  • Stock up on essentials: While the island has small markets and shops, choices are limited compared to bigger islands. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, your preferred toiletries, and any must-have medications. Also keep some cash on hand—some local spots don’t take cards.

  • Book ferries and charters early: If you’re arriving via Tortola or St. Thomas, ferry schedules can fill up, especially during high season. I recommend booking in advance and planning for some flexibility—island time is real.
