Day 1: Paradise of Oahu

A woman in a bikini holding a coconut standing on a beach with a mountain in the background

Welcome to this vibrant island paradise of Oahu where Pikake (Jasmine) blooms mingles with the salty breeze, and the lush foliage whispers tales of ancient secrets. As you step onto the bustling shores of Waikiki, immerse yourself in the vibrant colors, cultures and flavors that define this enchanting destination.

Arrive early to maximize your time exploring the treasures of Waikiki Beach, I kid you not, the waters are crystal-clear and palm trees sway in the gentle rhythm of the ocean.

If you find yourself hungry from your flight, fear not and try the following food places below:

  • Rainbow Drive In - my favorite is their plate lunch, which is a combination of different types of meats and is also a nod to their melting pot of cultures. They have options like teriyaki Chicken (Japan), Kalua pork (native Hawai'ian), short rib (Korean) with macaroni salad, potato salad (traditional American) and Filipino Adobo Fried Rice.

  • Leonard’s Malasadas - malasada is a Portuguese fried donut covered in sugar that can either come plain, or with deliciously sweet tropical flavors such as lilikoi (passionfruit), haupia (coconut), macadamia nut or classic flavors like custard and strawberry.

  • Waiola Shave Ice - Yes, shave ice as the locals call it, not shaved ice. A delightfully cooling combination of ice cream at the bottom, shave ice on top with an array of fresh flavors to choose from such as Watermelon, Li Hing (pickled, salty sweet plum skin powder) with an option to add filling azuki beans and condensed milk.

  • Foodland Farms - Foodland farms at Ala Moana Center boasts different types of ahi poke– from plain salted to soy sweet, to spicy mayo– personally I’m drooling just thinking about the options. Put your selected poke option over a bed of rice with unagi sauce and sriracha (if you’d like)-- the perfect meal to accompany sunbathing on

    Waikiki beach

  • 7/11 - Talk about DELICIOUS on a budget! Hawai'i’s 7/11 is not one to be messed with. For under $5, you can get yourself different types of musubi– a rice sandwich held by seaweed, with a protein of choice in the middle a dish that originated in and made popular in the islands of Hawai'i post World War II.

If you’re feeling luxurious, bask in the tranquility of an infinity pool at your hotel! You can also head to World Famous Waikiki Beach, and take a moment to unwind and soak up the sun, surrounded by the vibrant energy of fellow travelers eager to embark on their island adventures. Feel the soft sand beneath your feet as you listen to the soothing melody of the ocean, a tranquil soundtrack to your day of relaxation and exploration. Whether you're diving into the waves or simply basking in the warmth of the sun, the water’s right in front of you so how can you resist?!

If you want to get started on your botanical trek a day early, delve into Oahu's natural beauty with a leisurely stroll through the town’s Botanical Gardens, where the lush foliage of Foster's Garden or the UH Lyon Arboretum offer a peaceful escape.

Once you’re done exploring, return to your hotel and head to dinner with your travel besties at 'Olili, specializing in authentic local dishes crafted to accommodate all dietary preferences.

Day 2: Dive into Oahu's lush landscapes and vibrant culture

Rise and shine for a day of exploration! Day two is the best day to dive into Oahu's lush landscapes and vibrant culture.

On your way there, don't miss the scenic Ko’olau mountains from the tour bus along with monstrous Hawaiian pothos on the side of the highways. Our first stop, the Byodo In Temple. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of this Japanese oasis, and take a moment to meditate in the serene ambiance of the meditation temple, finding solace and serenity by the koi ponds. If you are so inclined, you are welcome to feed the ducks and the koi on the temple ponds, with temple purchased pet food, of course to keep the animals safe.

Then, get ready to venture to Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens, a haven of beauty and biodiversity nestled within Oahu's Windward side. Here, winding pathways lead you on a journey through lush rainforests and exotic landscapes, inviting you to marvel at unique of plant species from across the globe. As you enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch amidst nature's splendor, take all the photos in this iconic garden, but remember to be mindful of others taking pictures as well. The natural culture of Hawaii is Malama Ka Aina– taking care of the land literally, but also mindfulness of self, of the our waste, and of others.

No planty adventure in Oahu is complete without a bit of plant shopping! Stop at Plant Hawai'i, where you can find your new plant to take home as souvenirs of today's journey.

Finally, end your day by basking in the sun-kissed shores of Lanikai Beach, world renowned for its pristine sands and azure waters. Let the gentle lull of the waves soothe your soul as you relax in this idyllic haven, savoring the moments of bliss beneath the golden sun.

As we bid farewell to the windward side and return to Waikiki, take time to rest and rejuvenate before our group dinner. Let the memories of today's adventures linger like the scent of tropical blooms, promising more enchanting moments to come in this island paradise.

If you thought yesterday was adventurous, prepare yourself for day three as we delve into the untamed beauty of Oahu's North Shore!

Head on to your tour to the world famous North Shore of Oahu. Though the North Shore was made popular for surfing, Let the breathtaking vistas from the tour bus ignite your sense of wonder on your way there. Keep an eye out for the iconic landmarks of Kualoa Ranch (where they filmed Jurassic Park and many other movies) and the Polynesian Cultural Center, where the spirit of aloha thrives amidst the tropical splendor.

Our first stop brings us to Waimea Botanical Gardens. Did you know that Waimea Valley boasts a rich cultural heritage, once serving as a sacred gathering place for Native Hawai'ians and now home to over 5,000 species of plants, including rare and endangered varieties?

Take every photo and video opportunity on your walk because this is place is truly a botanical wonderland– Wild Philodendron Silver Swords, Mature Micans, Variegated Alocasias and Monsteras, galore! Venture into the different gardens that boast different species of snake plants, Hibiscus, ginger and many tropical plants all over the world.

At the end of this nature walk, there's a waterfall and a swimmable lake. So relax and dip your toes– or yourself– in the cool waters after the long walk among the plants.

Next, we’re taking a quick detour to indulge at the Kahuku/Haleiwa Gift and Food Truck Stop, where local artisans showcase their talents and mouthwatering treats await. The original Giovanni’s Shrimp truck is located here, among other delectable delights and handmade treasures crafted with love.

Day 3 ends at the legendary Waimea Bay Beach Park, where adrenaline junkies can take the plunge with an optional cliff jump into the crystalline waters below. You can also just watch the cliff divers as you bask in the sun on the pristine sands, feeling the warmth of the tropical sun on your skin as the waves roll in.

As the sun begins to set, we make our way back to Waikiki, where you can relax and rejuvenate before dinner.

As for dinner, it really depends on the group’s mood. If you’re feeling like going on a food adventure, there’s always The Deck at Queen Kapiolani hotel. From mouthwatering seafood to comforting local classics like Loco Moco, every dish at The Deck is a celebration of Hawaii's culinary heritage, crafted with care and passion using locally sourced ingredients. From there, you can take a walk down Kalakaua street and enjoy street entertainment, such as the Caricature Party on the strip.

Otherwise, if you’re feeling like eating something informal grabbing a bite to eat at Foodland Farms, 7/11 or Musubi Cafe Iyasume and gathering at the lobby, or in your friend’s hotel room for a cozy dinner in.

Typically, you would be on a charter bus with other attendees, so make sure the be promptly ready for pick up by 3:30 p.m. From there, Journey to Laie, the location of Polynesian Cultural Center and the heart of the Pacific as you are greeted with warm aloha and traditional lei, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening.

Day 5: Farewell Oahu

People on a narrow row boat

And now we come to our last day in Paradise–at least for now.

Either start your morning eating breakfast at the hotel, or explore one of my favorite breakfast establishments, Eggs ‘n’ Things. As the menu suggests, many of their dishes are egg-based with some vegetarian options.

Even though it’s the last day, I’d highly recommend one last beach day with our newfound besties at Waikiki Beach. Soak up the sun, reminisce stories, and capture precious moments with laughter and love (airdrop those pics, please!).

From there, you can extend your adventure to other islands – Maui, Hawai'i Island, or Kauai (ask me more about this), or return safely home and share with your friend your amazing, life-changing botanical and plant-filled journey
