Advisor - The Best of Aspen
Curator’s statement

The Aspen/Snowmass region has a special place in my heart because I grew up skiing Snowmass and would come year after year with my family. Now, I love returning to visit and recently spent a long weekend in Aspen in December 2025. Here are my top recommendations on what to explore—and reach out for help planning your trip, or to enhance your stay with VIP amenities.

Winter activities

If you ski or snowboard, then you’ll be in heaven visiting Aspen. There are four mountains to choose from, each with its own highlights. Aspen Mountain (AJAX) is located right in the heart of downtown Aspen, so it’s a great option if you’re staying in town and want easy access to the slopes. Aspen Highlands is home to the legendary Cloud Nine apres-ski. Both Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands are only for intermediate or advanced skiers.

Alternatively, Snowmass and Buttermilk are ideal for families and have options for beginners. The main difference between the two is that Snowmass is the largest mountain of the four, while Buttermilk is the smallest. My favorite mountains are Snowmass and Aspen Mountain. Snowmass is perfect for the whole family because the kids can partake in ski school, while the adults enjoy advanced ski runs. And I love Aspen Mountain for its iconic Little Nell run coming into downtown Aspen.

Spa treatments

Enjoy a spa day as a post-ski reset, or as the main activity. The RAKxa Wellness Spa at the St. Regis Aspen has a full spa with oxygen room, hot tubs and grotto, and of course, a full treatment menu. The Spa at Little Nell takes a more private approach, where each treatment room has its own steam shower, sauna, and fireplace so you can relax privately post-treatment. The Hotel Jerome also offers onsite spa treatments. I enjoyed a massage at The Spa at Little Nell, and it was the perfect end to an active ski trip. Beyond spas, several hotels have hot tubs or heated pools to relax in and take in mountain views.

Shopping

If you’re looking for a break from the outdoor activities, then you can easily fill your time shopping in Aspen. There are countless boutiques, luxury shops, and casual souvenir shops. Don’t miss Kemo Sabe to get fitted in a custom western hat.

Art galleries

While shopping, be sure to stop in the many art galleries, ranging from high-end contemporary to local art. Visit the Aspen Art Museum for the art or the educational workshops.

Apres-ski

Whether you’re skiing or just there for a good time, don’t miss the plentiful apres-ski experiences. From the casual Ajax Tavern at the base of Aspen Mountain, to the lively scene at Venga in Snowmass, or to the legendary Cloud Nine on the top of Aspen Highlands, known for its champagne showers.

Places to eat & drink in Aspen

Clark's Oyster Bar, Aspen

  • J-Bar: The oldest bar in Aspen, this is located in Hotel Jerome and is home to an amazing burger, sleek cocktails, and a welcoming atmosphere.

  • White House Tavern: Popular for apres-ski, or really any time of day, this restaurant is in the heart of Aspen and features American fare. They don’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait if dining at a busy time.

  • French Alpine Bistro: Walking into this restaurant immediately transports you to the French Alps, and you’re met with fireside, cozy decor. The main event is the fondue, but there are several other amazing items on the menu, and they even offer an apres-ski happy hour menu.

  • Clark’s Oyster Bar: Bringing Nantucket vibes to Aspen, this airy yet cozy restaurant features oysters and seafood.

  • Ajax Tavern: At the base of Aspen Mountain, part of the Little Nell, this is an indoor/outdoor spot perfect for an apres-ski drink or a casual meal.

  • Casa Tua Aspen: If you’re craving Italian cuisine, head to the upscale Casa Tua, located in downtown Aspen.

  • Matsuhisa Aspen: Featuring Japanese and sushi, this is an elevated experience. There are two dining areas, each with different menus.

  • Las Montanas: Excellent Tex-Mex cuisine in the heart of Aspen.

Need to know

When to visit depends on what you’re looking to do. If you’re not a skier, then the summer or fall can be great to enjoy scenic views and nice weather. If you’re looking to ski, then plan your visit for mid-December through early April.

Getting there involves a flight to Aspen. When there, if you’re staying downtown, you will not need a car. There is a fantastic bus system connecting the four mountains, and many hotels offer complimentary transfers to the mountains.
