Things to do in Hampton Roads

Military

USS Wisconsin: Explore one of the largest battleships ever built — one of the best Navy ship museums I’ve seen! Get ready to uncover its hidden corners and fascinating stories on a thrilling self-guided adventure — or take it up a notch with an expert-led guided tour. Exhibits all around the ship will give you keen insight on the day-to-day lives of the shipmen, as well as a great view of the Elizabeth River. Want to make it truly unforgettable? You and your family can spend a fun overnight on the ship for an extra fee.

Nauticus: This fascinating complex in Norfolk includes the Battleship Wisconsin (described above) as well as the Hampton Roads Naval Museum – which is free of charge! Explore fun interactive exhibits about naval life and learn about the maritime industry. You and your family can also visit the neighboring aquarium while in the area.

Military Aviation Museum: Hop over to Virginia Beach to get up close and personal with one of the world’s largest collections of historical military aircraft! Frequent special events at this museum include vintage air shows and flying demonstrations.

Mariners Museum and Park: You and your family could spend a full day exploring all that this museum has to offer. Uncover the fascinating world of naval history and maritime culture — told through powerful stories that highlight why it all matters, making every exhibit truly come to life! And the best part? Thanks to a generous private endowment, you can see all that Mariners has to offer for just $1 per person. No breaking the bank here!

Other things to do

Historic Triangle: The Hampton Roads region sits just south of the Historic Triangle, encompassing the key historic settlements of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. Visiting these sites to learn more about Revolutionary War history and the founding of America makes a great trip on its own, or as a few extra days tacked on to your military history tour. These three places are an easy 30- to 45-minute drive from Hampton Roads.

Busch Gardens: And for the kid in all of us, head over to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. From thrilling roller coasters to European themed villages, this amusement park is an action-packed break from the historic sites.

Places to eat & drink in Hampton Roads

One of the best Greek meals I've had in my life!

Kephi Greek Kitchen, Williamsburg: Easily one of the best restaurants I’ve eaten at. Its authentic Greek cuisine and exceptional service will keep you coming back. Be sure to try the moussaka, rich with sweet and savory spices. And don’t miss the dessert case – the baklava cheesecake is unforgettable!

Captain’s Den, Newport News: Don’t let the strip mall location drive you off from this hidden gem. Captain’s Den is a great place for a light lunch and an espresso drink. The food is flavorful, ranging from all-day breakfast items to soups and sandwiches. And, since it’s counter service, this is a more affordable option. Grab a bite here before heading to the nearby Mariners Museum!

Azzurri Italian Restaurant, Newport News: Combining traditional flavors with genuine hospitality, the owners of Azzurri are committed to using fresh, high-quality ingredients in their delicious food. Try their mouth-watering specialties which include chicken carbonara, top it off with cannoli for dessert and enjoy their extensive wine list.

Hilton Tavern, Newport News: Relax with an adult beverage and enjoy some house-smoked barbecue! Hilton’s menu includes hearty pub fare such as burgers and wings, all housed in a cozy historic building. Be sure to try one of their 22 beers on tap!
