Walk across the bridge to Enoshima
The experience starts before you even reach the island. Walking across the bridge gives you beautiful ocean views, fresh sea air, and your first glimpse of the island’s busy and energetic atmosphere.
Explore Enoshima Shrine
Enoshima Shrine is one of the island’s most famous attractions and is spread across multiple shrine areas connected by pathways and staircases. Visitors can try omikuji fortune slips and experience the island’s spiritual atmosphere tied to the legend of the goddess Benzaiten.
Ride the Enoshima Escar
If you want to save energy climbing the steep hills, the Enoshima Escar is a convenient paid escalator system that takes visitors partway up the island. Even with the escalator, you still get to enjoy plenty of walking and scenic viewpoints.
Visit the Enoshima Sea Candle
The Sea Candle lighthouse is the island’s most iconic viewpoint. The observation deck offers panoramic views of the coastline, ocean, and on clear days, even Mount Fuji in the distance.
Explore the coastal walking paths
One of the best parts of Enoshima is simply wandering through the island’s narrow streets and walking paths. The higher you climb, the more dramatic the scenery becomes, with cliffside viewpoints and ocean panoramas.
Visit the Enoshima Caves
The Iwaya Caves add a more adventurous side to the island experience. These sea caves are tied to Enoshima’s mythology and are a fun stop for travelers interested in local legends and history.
Browse the local shops
The island is filled with small shops selling snacks, souvenirs, and cat-themed merchandise. Exploring the shopping streets is part of the charm and gives the island a lively, local feel.
Look for the island cats
Enoshima is known for its many relaxed street cats that can be found throughout the island. Spotting them lounging near viewpoints and pathways adds personality to the experience.
Watch the sunset from the coastline
Sunset is one of the best times to experience Enoshima. The warm lighting over the ocean and coastline creates incredible views, especially from the Sea Candle or cliffside areas.
Experience the island’s mythology
Enoshima’s history is tied to the legend of the goddess Benzaiten and a five-headed dragon. Learning about the island’s myths gives extra meaning to the shrines and landmarks throughout the area.

Need to know
Enoshima involves a lot of walking and stairs, so comfortable shoes are highly recommended. Visiting around sunset gives you the best lighting and cooler temperatures, especially during warmer months. The island can get crowded on weekends and holidays, so visiting earlier in the day helps avoid the busiest times. If possible, combine Enoshima with nearby Kamakura for a full coastal day trip. Travelers should also know about the island’s famous legend that couples who visit together may break up because the goddess Benzaiten becomes jealous.
