Curator’s statement
I embarked on a seven-day tour of the Gaspesie Coast along Route 132 with my son. We discovered the amazing views and experienced the hospitality of the Gaspesie people. Most importantly, I discovered where my family started their lives in Canada hundreds of years ago.

Day 1: Arrive in Quebec City

Hotel L'Oie des neiges: the pool, hot tub and sauna
We picked up the rental car from Enterprise, where the staff always go above and beyond, making the start of any trip smooth and hassle-free.
We checked into Hotel L’Oie des neiges in Levis, a hidden gem just across the river from Quebec City. This hotel is a standout for its elegant, modern rooms and fantastic amenities like the pool, hot tub, and sauna—perfect for unwinding after travel. I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a cozy yet luxurious base with easy access to Quebec’s historic sites.
Day 2: Explore Quebec City

The view of Chateau Frontenac from the Citadelle
We dedicated the day to exploring Quebec City’s rich history and lively culture on foot. The Plains of Abraham, part of Battlefields Park, is a must-see, and we began our day there. There is so much history in this park.
The nearby Citadelle is an active military site with a fascinating history—it was the second residence of the Governor General of Canada. The Château Frontenac, with its fairy-tale castle look, is a photo favorite and offers a glimpse into the city’s colonial past.
A boat cruise aboard the Louis Jolliet is highly recommended to get a different perspective of Quebec’s skyline and waterfront—an experience that brings the city’s history and scenery to life.
For dining and shopping, Petit Champlain is the place to be, with its charming cobblestone streets and boutique shops.
We stumbled on the Festival d’été de Québec, which offers free outdoor concerts—perfect for music lovers and festival-goers.
Day 3: Drive along Highway 132 toward Mont-Joli

My son on the river bank in Mont-Joli, where the Saint Lawrence River has become 100% salt water
The scenic drive along Highway 132 is one of the trip’s highlights. As you venture inland toward Mont-Joli, the route offers breathtaking views of the coastline, waterfalls, lighthouses, and quaint villages—an ideal journey for anyone who appreciates natural beauty and road trip adventure.
The Auberge du Lac Malcolm is a charming lakeside retreat—an excellent choice for travelers seeking peace and tranquility. The small, boutique-style accommodations here are perfect for connecting with nature and unwinding after busy sightseeing days.
Day 4: Drive from Baie-des-Sables to Percé

Percé Rock
The drive from Baie-des-Sables to Percé is renowned among travelers for its stunning scenery. This route is a true bucket-list experience. The winding roads, coastal cliffs, waterfalls, and seals sunning on rocks create picture-perfect moments at every turn.
Percé’s iconic rock formation, Percé Rock, is one of the most photographed natural wonders in Quebec and a must-visit for anyone wanting to see a true geological marvel.
I recommend staying at Hotel Motel Panorama de Perce, which offers fantastic views of the coast and easy access to local attractions. This area is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone who loves rugged coastlines and marine wildlife.
Day 5: Cruise around Bonaventure Island

Gannet colony on Bonaventure Island
A cruise around Bonaventure Island is a highlight that no visitor should miss. The 90-minute tour with Croisières Julien Cloutier provides a chance to see seals, puffins, and an incredible colony of northern gannets, the largest accessible seabird colony in the world. This experience is perfect for nature lovers and birdwatchers, offering an up-close encounter with wildlife in their natural habitat. The island itself is steeped in history, once a vital fishing community, now a protected sanctuary.
After the cruise, exploring the island feels like stepping back in time—an immersive experience that combines natural beauty with cultural history. For those interested in birding, conservation, or simply stunning coastal scenery, this is a must-do.
Day 6: Drive to Carleton-sur-Mer

Learn how cod was salted at the Paspébiac historic fishing village
From Percé, the journey south to Carleton-sur-Mer took us to the region’s rich fishing history. The historic buildings at Paspébiac’s historic fishing village, dating back to 1783, offer a fascinating glimpse into the maritime industry that shaped Gaspésie. I suggest visiting the blacksmith shop, where you’ll find an expert who can share stories that bring the past to life.
The bright red St. Egar covered bridge is perfect for a picnic and offers a picturesque setting that’s ideal for photography and relaxation.
For travelers seeking a blend of history, culture, and seaside luxury, Manoir Belle Plage provides a top-tier experience with stunning views and exceptional service.
Day 7: Explore New Brunswick

New Brunswick
Our farewell to Gaspesie was bittersweet. We headed south, cruising scenic highways and exploring the coast of New Brunswick. Starting from Bathurst, then crossing through rugged, remote stretches like Highway 180, is perfect for adventure seekers who love off-the-beaten-path experiences.
Ending the trip at Riviere-du-Loup’s Hotel Universel, the largest hotel in Eastern Quebec, offers a comfortable and convenient base to reflect on the journey. Gaspesie is an ideal destination for travelers looking for rugged natural beauty, rich history, and outdoor adventures—perfect for families, history buffs, birdwatchers, and anyone craving a true escape into nature.
Need to know
While most Quebecers’ first language is French, and it is predominately spoken in the area, don’t worry! We had absolutely no issues communicating with our limited French. English is spoken and understood very well.
