Curator’s statement

Oregon is a destination rich in nature and full of weirdness. Much of the state is full of mountainous ranges with tall pine trees. The climate here is moderate and is great for escaping the heat or for exploring the mountains without packing snow gear.

Things to do in Oregon

Oregon waterfall

Powell’s Books - This is no ordinary bookstore! Powell’s takes up 3-stories of a city block, covering 68,000 square feet. This store is full of every type of book you can imagine. Plus, be sure to check out the rare book collection on the 3rd floor for first editions and other rare works of literature.

Washington Park - This park covers an impressive 410 acres and is home to more than 15 miles of trails. Within the park you will be able to explore the impressive Hoyt Arboretum, International Rose Test Garden, the zoo and a children’s museum, all with stunning views of Oregon’s wildlife and Portland’s skyline. This park is conveniently located right off the MAX train in town and there is a free tram that helps you get around to the different destinations within the park.

Pearl District - Wander through this district to find hip eateries, breweries and interesting shops. You could certainly make an afternoon (or full day) of exploring this more than 10-block district.

Saturday Market - If you are visiting on a Saturday, you must go check out the Saturday Market. It’s just off the river and covers nearly three blocks with uniquely crafted goods from local Oregonians. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a souvenir or three.

Stroll (or Bike) Along the Willamette River - This river runs through downtown Portland and is great for capturing views of the city while getting your blood pumping.

Visit the Nike Campus - The infamous shoe and athletic company got its start just outside Portland in Beaverton, OR. You can take public transportation or drive to the headquarters, just be sure you book a tour in advance. Tours cover a visit to the Nike campus, and if you are lucky, you might be able to spot one of Nike’s designers working on a prototype. The tours wrap up at the employee store where you can score discounted merchandise.

Tax-Free Shopping - Take advantage of the lack of taxes that exist in Oregon and shop till you drop. In addition to the Pearl District, there are also local and chain shops along 23rd Avenue and centered around Pioneer Square.

Multnomah Falls - Visit one of the top tourist destinations in the state at this 620 foot waterfall. It’s easy to see why this spot draws in crowds - the awe-inspiring waterfall is mere steps from the parking lot and can be easily accessible. However, if moderate hiking is more your thing, there are tons of trails that connect to this destination. Beware, parking is limited to be sure to plan this for early in the morning.

Food in Oregon

Food Carts

Stretch the Noodle - This food stall is located within the 5th street food carts and boasts of fresh stretched noodles. They offer a limited menu that varies to keep you coming back for more. This cart has limited hours, so be sure to plan your visit Monday - Friday from 11am - 3pm.

Chicken and Guns - Located within the Cartopia food carts, this uniquely named cart specializes in delicious woodfired chicken and guns (crisp & tasty potatoes) all with a Latin American flair. It may be simple, but it’s sure to be one of your favorites. Plus, at this location they have shared tables around fire pits to keep any cool breeze at bay.

From Russia With Love - This one is in a nearby Portland suburb of Oregon City, but is worth the drive. This cart is centered around delicious Russian pastries filled with a variety of meat and vegetables. If you aren’t feeling super adventurous, be sure to at least try their s’mores or fruit-filled pastries for dessert.

Lunch or Anytime

Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen - There is an impressive number of Asian restaurants in the area, but Luc Lac offers something most of those don’t have - ambiance. The ceiling is covered with paper fans and the light is just dim enough that you won’t see everyone slurping down their delicious pho or vermicelli dishes. Lines can form at lunch and dinner, so be sure you are prepared to wait or go early.

Grassa - This Italian joint boasts homemade noodles and will make you question why you ever ate store-bought noodles to begin with.

Dinner

Jake’s Famous Crawfish - If you are seeking fresh seafood, look no further than Jakes. Their menu offers dishes with the freshest of seafood. The clam chowder is always a winner. Plus, if the weather is right, sitting outside gives you a prime-time view of some of the oddities the city is known for.

Portland City Grill - Located on the 30th floor of the US Bank Tower, this spot offers breathtaking views of the Portland area. It’s the perfect spot for drinks overlooking the city or to visit for a special occasion. In the bar area, you will often find musicians performing at the piano.

Doughnuts

VooDoo Doughnuts - These pastries are quintessential to your visit and put Portland’s Doughnut scene on the map. There are several locations throughout the metro and they are open late, making it a great post-dinner stop.

Coco Doughnuts - Only open until mid-afternoon, you will be lucky to snag a doughnut from here before they sell out. Their classic Mochi doughnuts are super chewy (not what you normally expect in a doughnut) but are a welcome delight in the doughnut culture of Portland.
